J R R Tolkien has ruled over the genre of fantasy ever since his worldbuilding defined the genre itself, and has been delighting fans of The Lord of The Rings ever since. Peter Jackson brought his books to life on the big screen almost twenty years ago. But there’s more good news – Amazon prime is coming out with the newest film in the series , entitled ‘Lord of the Rings: The Ring of Power’. This series will overtake even Game of Thrones in its massive budget – 465 million dollars. Charlotte Brandstrom will direct the epic series, and Christopher Newman, will produce it. In addition, Payne and McKay will serve as executive producers, alongside Lindsey Weber, Callum Green, Jason Cahill and more.
The series will be releasing on Amazon Prime on the 2nd of September, 2022. The first season will have weekly episodes, for eight weeks – meaning eight episodes in total. The setting will be the same as the Lord of the Rings books – the Middle Earth. This fantastical place, full of mystical creatures like hobbits, wizards, dragons, elves, orcs, trolls, wangs, dwarves and more is the epitome of worldbuilding. The magical system and creatures in the series will be the same as Tolkien’s trademark Middle-Earth. However, the time setting will differ. The Rings of Power series will take place about a thousand years before the events of Peter Jackson’s movies.
The characters will be a combination of new and old ones. Plus, they will all face the ‘re-emergence of evil in the Middle-Earth’. The producers further claim that the series will unify several core stories of the books. These will include the making of rings, the rise of the Dark Lord Sauron and the tale of Numenor. The synopsis also says ‘From the darkest depths of the Misty Mountains to the majestic forests of Lindon, to the breath-taking kingdom of Numenor, to furthest reaches of the map, these kingdoms and characters will carve out legacies that live on long after they are gone”. But obviously, the details of the plot are carefully hidden, and the suspense is high. Of course, the cast will be a huge ensemble, featuring the likes of Cynthia Addai-Robinson, Morfydd Clark, Ismael Cruz Cordova, Sophia Nomvete and Lloyd Owen.
For all those wondering exactly what these ‘The rings of power’ are and what the hype is all about, we have you covered. Even if you haven’t read or watched Lord of the Rings before, this plot will be smooth enough to follow because it precedes the events of the books and movies. Hence no prior knowledge will not take away from the experience. However, some basic knowledge of Tolkien’s magic systems will probably make the series more enjoyable. The title of the series comes from Tolkien’s magic artefacts, the rings of power. These are made by the Eleven-smiths of the Noldorin settlement of Eregion. These rings command immense power and are likely to play a very important role in the series.
The Three Rings were the last to come into existence. They take after the three elements of fire, water and air. Sauron salvaged The Seven and gifted them to seven kindreds of the dwarves. Finally, Sauron gave The Nine to Men, who became sorcerers, kings and warriors.
So, book your dates for September, because we’re sure this is going to be the next big thing. In fact, this might just overtake Game of Thrones, and become the highest grossing series of all time. Not only does this unite a seemingly stellar cast with a great director, but also the resources put in suggest a truly authentic worldbuilding. Not to mention the amount of love LOTR fans will shower upon a well made show!
