As YouTube celebrates its 20th anniversary, the platform is rolling out a series of updates and new features aimed at enhancing user experience across devices. Among the most notable announcements are the expansion of the multiview feature on YouTube TV, a major redesign of the YouTube app for TVs, and additional perks for YouTube Premium subscribers.

Multiview Feature Expands Beyond Sports

YouTube is extending its popular “multiview” feature beyond just NFL Sunday Ticket and March Madness. In the coming weeks, YouTube TV subscribers will have the chance to test a new version of multiview that includes select non-sports content. This new capability will initially be available with a limited number of popular channels, with plans to expand it over time.

First introduced in 2023, multiview quickly became a hit with sports fans, allowing them to watch multiple live games simultaneously. YouTube also used it during live events like Coachella, showcasing its broader potential. Now, the company wants to bring that same flexibility to a wider range of content genres.

According to YouTube spokesperson Allison Toh, the goal is to eventually roll out multiview across a broad set of networks. While some networks may initially opt out, YouTube is working to bring this functionality to as many content types as possible.

YouTube TV App to Get a Netflix-Style Redesign

Alongside the multiview upgrade, YouTube is also redesigning its TV app interface. The updated design promises smoother navigation, enhanced playback, and better access to essential features such as comments, channel details, and subscription options.

The redesign is expected to roll out this summer and may mirror elements of Netflix’s user interface. Reports suggest YouTube could place paid subscriptions directly on the app’s homepage, making it easier for users to discover and manage premium content.

These changes reflect a growing trend: more people are now watching YouTube on their televisions than on their mobile devices. With this shift in viewing behavior, a cleaner, more intuitive TV interface is a logical step forward.

YouTube Premium Gets New Playback Features

YouTube Premium subscribers are also getting some notable upgrades. One standout addition is the ability to watch videos at 4x speed on both iOS and Android devices—double the previous maximum playback speed. This feature, which began testing earlier this year, is now rolling out widely.

Additionally, YouTube Music is introducing a new feature called Ask Music, which lets Premium users generate personalized radio stations through voice commands. While the feature is currently available in English in select countries, YouTube plans to expand it to more languages and regions in the near future.

YouTube TV’s Rapid Growth

Thanks to features like multiview and unlimited DVR, YouTube TV has seen impressive subscriber growth. Official numbers from Google in 2024 indicated over 8 million users, though industry analysts suggest the number could now exceed 10 million. That growth positions YouTube TV as a top contender in the U.S. pay-TV market, potentially on track to take the number one spot.

A Look Back at 20 Years of YouTube

Celebrating its two-decade milestone, YouTube also shared some eye-opening statistics. Since the first video, Me at the Zoo, was uploaded in 2005, users have added over 20 billion videos to the platform. Today, more than 20 million videos are uploaded daily.

Music remains one of YouTube’s most popular categories. To date, over 300 music videos have surpassed 1 billion views. Adele’s Hello holds the record as the fastest to reach that mark, achieving it in just 88 days.
