The world of Spider-Man is no stranger to multiversal chaos, secret identities, and the heavy burden of responsibility. However, the latest issue, Amazing Spider-Man: Spider-Versity (2026), takes the “Web-Slinger” lore in a fascinating, if not controversial, new direction. It’s not just a story about heroes teaming up; it’s about structure, tactics, and the shadow of a legacy that refuses to die. In this detailed breakdown, we’ll explore every twist and turn of the first 28 pages, leading up to a cliffhanger that promises a bloody future for our favorite wall-crawlers.

New Beginning

The story itself kicks off at Empire State University (ESU). We find a diverse group of Spider-heroes gathered for what they believe is a standard meeting. The roster is impressive: Miles Morales (Spider-Man), Gwen Stacy (Ghost-Spider), Cindy Moon (Silk), Bailey Briggs (Spider-Boy), Maka Akana (Spider-Girl), and Aña Corazón (Araña).

Miles Morales takes the lead, attempting to give an inspiring speech. The vibe is a bit informal at first—Bailey and Maka are slouching, prompting Miles to ask them to go into “big-kid mode” for the remainder of his presentation. Miles explains that while they’ve teamed up many times over the years, their collaborations are often impromptu and chaotic. He proposes something more official: a dedicated training program.

The Avengers vs. The X-Men: A Heroic Debate

The proposal immediately sparks a lighthearted but telling debate among the team. When Miles suggests they could train to reach the level of the Avengers or the X-Men, the others are quick to point out the flaws in those organizations.

  • Araña notes that the Avengers are famous for their infighting.
  • Spider-Boy humorously remarks that the “X-Men kiss each other too much,” a nod to the complex social dynamics of the mutant teams.

Despite the banter, the team is skeptical. Silk argues that they all “punch above their weight class” regularly and don’t necessarily need a formal academy. However, Miles reminds them of their recent defeat at Oscorp against the Goblin-Slayers, where they were effectively “kicked in the butt”. He believes they need to “level up” together.

Then comes the bombshell: the idea for this union didn’t come from Peter Parker. It came from Norman Osborn.

The Goblin Crashes the Party

The mention of Norman Osborn sends shockwaves through the group. The Spider-heroes know Norman as the Green Goblin—the man who murdered Gwen Stacy (in her home universe) and has spent decades terrorizing Peter Parker. Silk is particularly appalled, asking Miles if he’s “brunching with Doc Ock later”.

Miles tries to defend the choice, explaining that Norman “isn’t the Goblin anymore” and actually served as a “pretty dang good Spider-Man” while Peter was away. But before he can finish his explanation, the group’s Spider-Senses begin to wail.

In a shower of glass and a roar of jet engines, a figure crashes through the window on a high-tech glider. It’s Norman Osborn. Miles initially tries to calm the team, shouting that Norman is there to help and probably didn’t mean to break the glass. But Norman’s expression is cold, and he utters five chilling words: “The plan has changed”.

The Entrance Exam: A Tactical Deconstruction

What follows is an intense, high-stakes battle that serves as a brutal “entrance exam” for the young heroes. Norman, utilizing his superior technology and years of tactical experience, begins to systematically dismantle the team.

  • Miles Morales: Norman immediately gets into Miles’ head. He mocks Miles for his “guns blazing” approach and his lack of a backup plan. Norman uses psychological warfare, telling Miles he is “practically made of wasted potential” and that his emotional nature makes him “soft”.
  • Anya and Silk: Norman is prepared for their specific abilities. Knowing that Silk’s power transfer or movements can be triggered by eye contact, he reveals he has developed protective lenses specifically to counter them.
  • Spider-Boy (Bailey Briggs): Bailey tries to use his magical connections and his training from the Spider-Society, but Norman is unimpressed. He dismisses Bailey as “not done baking yet” and claims to have learned more magic in one round of squash with Doctor Druid than Bailey has in his entire career.
  • Maka Akana (Spider-Girl): Maka shows some initiative by leaping onto Norman’s glider, trying to figure out how to fly it. However, the glider is rigged and “leaps” in a way she doesn’t expect, leading to a crash.

Throughout the fight, Norman is relentless with his insults. He calls them “costumed clowns” and “foot soldiers,” lamenting that the six of them together couldn’t do what Peter Parker could do alone.

The Arrival of Spider-Woman

Just as Norman seems to have the upper hand, a seventh Spider-hero enters the fray: Jessica Drew, the original Spider-Woman. She is not amused. She calls Norman’s behavior “pathetic” and is ready to “go Akira on his butt”.

The tension reaches a boiling point as Jessica prepares to throttle Norman. Miles and Gwen desperately try to intervene, with Miles shouting that this was all “an exercise”. Jessica is stunned and disgusted. She tells Miles that even if he wants to forgive Norman, this “stress test” went too far.

The Philosophy of Spider-Versity

In the aftermath of the “battle,” the team gathers to confront Miles and Norman. Miles stands his ground, arguing that they have had too many “close calls” lately. He insists they need to start planning for problems before they happen, and he admits that “no one is better at planning than Norman Osborn”.

Norman, now out of his menacing gear, explains the logistics. He has used his massive wealth and influence at the university to secure a training ground. They are standing in Harry Osborn Hall, named after his late son. Since the building is technically “under construction,” they can operate there without public scrutiny.

Norman offers them everything: resources, equipment developed by his R&D department, and a place to reside if they choose. He even claims that Peter Parker approves of the initiative, though Peter couldn’t be there due to “Pete stuff”.

Norman welcomes them to what he calls “Osborn’s Arachno-Academy,” but the team quickly rejects that name. Bailey Briggs suggests a much better one: “Spider-Versity”.

The Burden of the Past

Despite the initial anger, Gwen Stacy eventually sides with Miles. She admits she doesn’t like being attacked or insulted as part of training, and she agrees that Miles should have cleared the plan with the team first. However, she acknowledges that “things are getting crazier out there” and that they need to be prepared. The team agrees to stay, and training is set to begin at 6 A.M. the next morning.

The issue ends with a poignant conversation between Jessica Drew and Norman Osborn. Jessica remains deeply suspicious, threatening to “end” Norman in a way Peter never could if he steps out of line.

Norman, surprisingly, doesn’t fight back. He admits that he is haunted by his past and that he truly wants to make amends. He expresses a chilling tactical truth: he knows the Green Goblin could return one day. “Every new day could be the one where the Goblin returns,” Norman says. “And when he does, those kids are targets”. He wants to ensure that when that day comes, they are strong enough to stop the Goblin, even if he himself cannot.

The final page provides the “To Be Continued” hook that every comic reader dreads and loves. In a dark corner, a familiar, raspy sound echoes: “CAH… CAH… CAH… CAH… CAH… CARNAGE…”.

To Be Continued…

It seems the Spider-Versity students won’t have to wait long for their first real-world test. While Norman Osborn tries to teach them how to be tacticians, a symbiotic nightmare is rising—one that doesn’t care about “entrance exams” or “tactical planning”.
