Ben Affleck returns as Christian Wolff in the long-awaited action thriller sequel, The Accountant 2, which will premiere globally on Prime Video on Thursday, June 5. Amazon MGM Studios confirmed the streaming release following the film’s successful theatrical run in April.
A Strong Start in Theaters and Acclaim at SXSW
Before heading to streaming, The Accountant 2 made a strong impact at the box office, grossing over $100 million worldwide. The film first premiered at the prestigious SXSW Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim and took home the festival’s Headliner Audience Award. The sequel builds on the momentum of the original 2016 film, which earned $155 million during its theatrical run and later became the most-rented digital title of the following year.
Plot: A Cryptic Message and a Deadly Conspiracy
Directed by Gavin O’Connor and written by Bill Dubuque, The Accountant 2 picks up after the events of the first film. Christian Wolff (Ben Affleck), a brilliant forensic accountant with autism, finds himself at the center of another dangerous mission. When a former associate is murdered, leaving behind the haunting message, “find the accountant,” Wolff is drawn into a complex web of mystery and violence.
Realizing the stakes are higher than ever, Christian seeks the help of his estranged and lethal brother, Braxton Wolff (Jon Bernthal). Together, they team up with U.S. Treasury Deputy Director Marybeth Medina (Cynthia Addai-Robinson) to uncover a deadly conspiracy. Their pursuit puts them on the radar of a ruthless network of killers willing to do anything to keep their secrets hidden.

The company acquired the sequel rights from Warner Bros. and partnered with Amazon MGM Studios to distribute the film.

Early Reviews: A Mixed Yet Entertaining Ride
USA TODAY’s Brian Truitt rated The Accountant 2 ★★½ out of four stars. While the sequel may not capture the full magic of the original, Truitt noted it remains “mostly satisfying,” describing it as:
“Take Ben Affleck’s original The Accountant, subtract the math, add country line dancing and multiply it by two brothers.”
