There are two types of books in publication (apart from mass market paperback) which people turn to the most – paperback and hardcover. Paperback are basically books which use paperboards as their cover page, and glue for binding. Conversely, hardcover use cardboards as their cover pages, and stitches or stapes for binding. But paperback or hardcover books: which one you should choose? Of course, this is a matter of personal choice. But readers must take into account several considerations in order to make an informed choice, some of which are detailed here.

Paperback Or Hardcover books: Which One You Should Choose?

Portability

To decide whether to opt for paperback or hardcover Books, it’s important to know where, how and under what circumstances you’ll be reading a particular book. Paperback, due to their being lightweight, smaller in size and foldable, are easily portable. Conversely hardcover are heavier, larger in dimensions and not foldable at all. This restricts their use. Thus, if you mean to travel a lot or need to keep books in limited space, paperback would be the best option.

Sustainability

Paperback Books are more sustainable than hardcover, simply because they use up less wood and pulp. In crafting hardback which are larger in size and more elaborately fashioned, more stuff is used which harms the environment. However, since hardcover have better quality of materials, it makes sense that they use more ecofriendly glues and materials. Plus they will trap more carbon in landfills, which is better for the environment.

Price

One very important and obvious factor to consider while making a choice between paperback and hardcover books is price. Because hardcover make use of extensive paper and materials of good quality, they tend to be expensive. So what one really needs to consider is the purpose of the book. If the book means something significant, or you intend to reread it often, or if you have a high budget, hardcover are a good idea. But conversely, if you are low on a budget or don’t intend to reread, then paperback might be more sustainable.

Durability

Again, hardcover books due to their superior quality are more durable. Plus, the binding makes them more resistant to wear and tear than paperback. Paperback books, especially mass market ones, tend to corrode easily. Water can spoil them, pages can become yellow and dingy and the binding can fall apart easily. Apart from this, the binding at one place can become frayed, which means the book opens readily on that page but not others. So if you want a book to last, hardcover might be the best option.

Collectability

Sometimes, people wish to buy books for their collection. Whether this is an individual interested in collecting books or a library doing it for artistic or archival purposes, quality and durability come into the picture. Since hardcover books steal the show with both quality and durability, they might be a better option in this case. The spines usually also look better on hardcover than paperback, so they lend an aesthetic feel to the space they occupy.

Fanciness

Hardcover are, to put it simply, more fancy than paperback. Since you pay more for them, it is obvious that their designers put more effort into design. Thus, hardcover take into account design and art objects apart from usability. So if you’re someone who pays attention to detail and wants to peruse books for more than just reading purposes, hardcover might be the way to go for you.

Personal ease of usage

Finally, it all comes down to what personally suits you and feels right for you. For instance, most people find paperback to be the more elite option, but are more comfortable using paperback that can be handled more roughly. Other times, people cannot afford hardcover which are way out of their budget but choose to buy them for their long lasting nature and ability to withstand strain. Either way, it’s important to see what works for you. Paperback or hardcover books and go for it.
