Fans of sci-fi horror have reason to celebrate—Alien: Romulus is getting a sequel. Director Fede Álvarez, who revived the Alien franchise with his 2024 hit, has confirmed that he’s already working on the script for the follow-up. After the success of Romulus, both critically and commercially, 20th Century Studios has greenlit the next installment, and Álvarez is set to return as both writer and director.

Building on the Success of Romulus

Released in 2024 and produced by scott Free Productions, Alien: Romulus brought the franchise back to its horror-thriller roots. The film grossed over $350 million worldwide and earned an Oscar nomination for Best Visual Effects. Its stripped-down intensity and claustrophobic setting struck a chord with audiences, signaling a much-needed course correction for the long-running series.

Set on a doomed space station, Romulus followed a group of young space explorers who encounter the terrifying Xenomorphs. Among them, Cailee Spaeny’s Rain Carradine and David Jonsson’s android character Andy emerged as the only survivors, creating a compelling sibling dynamic that left plenty of room for further development.

Álvarez Promises New Territory for the Sequel

Speaking during a recent IMAX Q&A hosted by Collider, Álvarez confirmed he’s currently writing the sequel, which he believes will be his next film. While he hasn’t revealed any specific plot details, the director emphasized his goal to push the franchise into “uncharted waters.”

“I think for the next one it would be nice to go further, to go to places where you don’t know anything that’s going to happen,” Álvarez said. “That’s the most exciting thing for me.”

He described the Alien universe as a “vast horizon,” filled with opportunities to explore fresh ideas and concepts. This suggests the sequel won’t be a simple continuation of Romulus, but rather an ambitious expansion of the mythos—possibly shifting the focus to different characters, settings, or even time periods.

Returning Cast and New Faces

While casting has yet to be officially announced, industry insiders suggest that Cailee Spaeny is likely to reprise her role as Rain, given the open-ended nature of her character’s arc. David Jonsson is also expected to return as Andy, considering the emotional depth of his relationship with Rain.

Álvarez has hinted at introducing new characters as well—possibly other survivors or explorers who stumble upon the Xenomorph threat under entirely different circumstances. The addition of new perspectives could breathe fresh life into the series while retaining the core tension that fans love.

A Standalone Approach Within the Alien Universe

One of the most intriguing aspects of Álvarez’s vision is his willingness to treat each installment as a self-contained story within the broader Alien universe. Romulus itself existed outside the main Ripley timeline, offering a fresh narrative without being weighed down by past continuity.

This standalone approach could allow the sequel to explore other corners of the galaxy—colonies, derelict ships, or unknown regions where the Xenomorphs have left their deadly mark. By sidestepping traditional franchise baggage, Álvarez is free to take creative risks while keeping the suspense alive.

Production Timeline and Future Outlook

Álvarez has indicated that production on the sequel could begin as early as late 2025, with a possible theatrical release by 2026. With the script in development and casting discussions underway, momentum is clearly building behind the scenes.

Both the studio and the director have expressed a shared commitment to making the sequel meaningful—not just a reaction to the first film’s box office performance. If Álvarez delivers on his vision, the next chapter in the Alien saga could be one of its most daring and inventive yet.
