Fast Forever Set for 2028: Everything We Know About the Final Fast & Furious Movie

After years of uncertainty and delays, the long-running Fast & Furious franchise has finally locked in a finish line. Universal has officially announced that the eleventh and final main film in the saga will be titled Fast Forever, and it is set to hit theaters on March 17, 2028.

The announcement came directly from Vin Diesel himself, who shared the news through Instagram. Diesel posted a nostalgic image from the very first The Fast and the Furious movie, featuring him alongside his late co-star Paul Walker. In the photo, Walker is seen handing Diesel a car key — a symbolic moment that feels especially meaningful now that the franchise is approaching its conclusion.

Along with the image, Diesel wrote an emotional caption:
“No one said the road would be easy… but it’s ours. One that has defined us and become our legacy… And a legacy… lasts forever.”

It was a message clearly aimed at longtime fans who have followed Dominic Toretto and his crew for over two decades.

A Long Wait After Fast X

Fans have been waiting for this final chapter for nearly three years. The last mainline film, Fast X, released in 2023 and ended on a massive cliffhanger, originally setting up a sequel titled Fast X: Part Two. However, since then, plans for the finale have been constantly shifting.

Now officially renamed Fast Forever, the film is confirmed as the last core installment in the main Fast Saga. What remains unclear is whether it will directly continue the storyline from Fast X or take a different narrative direction altogether. There have been ongoing rumors that the studio may abandon the previous plot and instead introduce a new story with a fresh antagonist.

What Happens to the Villains?

Fast X introduced new major villains to the franchise, most notably Jason Momoa’s Dante Reyes and Alan Ritchson’s Aimes. While fans expected their arcs to be resolved in the main sequel, that may no longer be the case.

If Fast Forever shifts away from the Fast X storyline, those characters could instead find closure in the upcoming spinoff film Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Reyes. That project is expected to team up Momoa’s Dante with Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs, potentially wrapping up their conflict outside the main saga. Since Aimes is closely tied to Reyes, Ritchson could also make an appearance there.

Interestingly, Momoa himself admitted in late 2025 that he hadn’t heard much about the next main film. He said he would love to return, especially given how popular his character became, but revealed that he hadn’t even seen a script yet.

Behind-the-Scenes Struggles

The road to Fast Forever hasn’t been smooth. The project went through multiple delays, starting with the Hollywood strikes, which slowed down development across the industry. After that, reports suggested that Universal demanded the film’s budget stay under $200 million, warning that the project could be scrapped if costs went out of control.

Another major change reportedly involves the cast. Over the years, the Fast franchise has grown into a massive ensemble, featuring nearly every major action star imaginable. The studio is now said to want a smaller lineup, or at least significantly reduced screen time for some characters, to keep production manageable.

Fast X alone featured a huge roster including Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, John Cena, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Scott Eastwood, Helen Mirren, Brie Larson, Rita Moreno, Jason Statham, Charlize Theron, Jason Momoa, Alan Ritchson, and several others.

Whether all of them will return for the final chapter remains uncertain.

Familiar Creative Team Returns

Despite the delays and changes, one key piece remains consistent. Louis Leterrier, who directed Fast X, is officially returning to helm Fast Forever. He will once again be behind the camera for the saga’s conclusion, bringing continuity to the final chapter.

Leterrier’s return suggests that even if the story shifts, the tone and style of the franchise will remain familiar — big action, emotional family moments, and over-the-top set pieces.

The End of an Era

The Fast & Furious franchise began in 2001 as a street racing movie and slowly transformed into one of the biggest action series in cinema history. Over the years, it evolved from underground car culture into global espionage, heists, and explosive stunts that defy physics and logic.

Now, more than 25 years later, Fast Forever is being positioned as the official farewell to the main saga — a final ride for Dominic Toretto and the “family” that defined a generation of blockbuster filmmaking.

With its release date now locked for March 17, 2028, the countdown to the end of the Fast Saga has finally begun. And if Vin Diesel’s words are any indication, the franchise isn’t just ending — it’s aiming to cement its legacy.
