John Brenkus, the Emmy-winning creator and host of the iconic show Sports Science, has passed away at the age of 54. His family announced the heartbreaking news on Sunday night, revealing that Brenkus died on May 31, 2025, after a long struggle with depression.

A Legacy Built on Science and Sports

Brenkus launched Sports Science in 2007 on Fox Sports Net. The show later found a new home at ESPN, where it quickly became a fan favorite. Through over 1,800 segments, Brenkus used science and technology to explain some of the most extraordinary feats in sports. From breaking down Tyreek Hill’s lightning-fast sprinting to analyzing Joey Chestnut’s jaw-dropping hot dog-eating abilities, his work made complex athletic phenomena engaging and easy to understand.

His efforts earned him six Emmy Awards and cemented Sports Science as a groundbreaking program in the world of sports media. ESPN eventually purchased the brand, but Brenkus continued producing content on his own digital platforms in recent years.

A Voice for Mental Health Awareness

Beyond his contributions to sports media, Brenkus also became known for his openness about his mental health struggles. In a 2023 interview with former NFL player Marcellus Wiley, Brenkus candidly spoke about a time he attempted suicide and was saved by his dog. His honesty resonated deeply with many and helped destigmatize conversations around depression and mental health.

Following his death, his family shared a heartfelt message on social media:

Tributes From Across the Sports World

News of Brenkus’s passing sparked an outpouring of grief and gratitude from across the sports world. Broadcasters, athletes, and fans alike took to social media to honor his legacy, share memories, and highlight the impact he had on both the media industry and mental health advocacy.
