Comfort Me With Apples by Catherynne M. Valente is an interesting mashup of two myths. The twists and turns of this story are beautifully executed. The story begins with a Stepford Wives sort of feel and afterwards takes a turn that was very astonishing and turns into a different kind of story totally.
Sophia’s life is perfect, she has everything, a loving husband and lives in an exclusive gated community. This gate community is an ultimate in amenities, protection, quietness and security. The outside world can’t give you trouble here.”
The house is grand. Her life is brilliant, beautiful…perfect. However, she must sleep all alone. His crucial job requires him to be on call. Sophia doesn’t mind.
Sophia will be excited when the basement is finished because it will include a work area for her. Until now, it is dangerous and she could get injured. The entryway to the basement is locked. Recommended to those who like reading traditional mythology. If you are one of those you will like this too. Although It was equal amounts of predictable and surprising with lots of unfolded at the very end. Comfort Me With Apples is amazing and less abstract than a lot of Catherynne M. Valente’s novels, making it much more accessible to a larger group of readers.
