Warner Bros. has officially greenlit “Minecraft Movie 2” a sequel to the highly successful “A Minecraft Movie,” with plans to release on July 23, 2027. Jared Hess, who directed the original film, will return to direct the sequel as well as co-write the screenplay alongside Chris Galletta. Although details about the plot and cast have not yet been revealed, the production team includes key figures from the first installment, such as producers Jason Momoa, Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Roy Lee, Eric McLeod, Kayleen Walters, and Torfi Frans Ólafsson.
The original “A Minecraft Movie” made a remarkable impact at the box office, opening to a record $163 million domestically and generating $424 million in the United States overall. Globally, it approached the $1 billion mark in total earnings, solidifying its status as the second highest-grossing film of 2025, just behind Disney’s live-action remake of “Lilo and Stitch,” which earned $1.03 billion. Initial expectations for the Minecraft film were modest, with Warner Bros. predicting an opening between $70 million and $80 million, against a budget of $150 million. However, it surpassed these projections significantly, concluding its theatrical run with $957 million worldwide.

Following the movie’s release, the popularity of the Minecraft video game itself experienced a surge. Research by Ampere Analysis reported a 30% increase in monthly active users in April, with over half of these being returning players, highlighting the film’s positive influence on the game’s player base. Industry observers believe the success of the Minecraft adaptation could pave the way for more video game adaptations in Hollywood, potentially transforming gaming franchises into major motion picture hits.
In addition to announcing the Minecraft sequel, Warner Bros. also adjusted its animated film schedule, moving “Bad Fairies” from its original July 23, 2027 release date to May 21, 2027. The animated film will star Cynthia Erivo in the voice cast and is directed by Megan Nicole Dong and Olivier Staphylas, with a screenplay by Deborah Frances-White.
The Minecraft sequel continues to be helmed by Legendary Entertainment, returning as both financier and producer, with Mary Parent and Cale Boyter continuing their production roles. The sequel’s screenplay remains tightly under wraps but is anticipated to explore further worlds and characters within the expansive Minecraft universe, building on the original film’s success and fan enthusiasm.
