The first official glimpse of Ramayana is finally here—and if early reactions are anything to go by, this is not just another film announcement. It is the beginning of an ambitious cinematic event that aims to redefine scale, storytelling, and spectacle in Indian cinema.

Unveiled on April 2, coinciding with the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, the teaser—referred to as the “Rama glimpse”—offers audiences their first proper look at Nitesh Tiwari’s long-anticipated adaptation of the epic. It also marks the formal launch of the film’s promotional campaign, setting the tone for what is being positioned as one of the biggest releases India has ever seen.

At the heart of the teaser is Ranbir Kapoor’s portrayal of Lord Rama. The visuals trace key moments from the epic—from royal coronation sequences to the quiet intensity of exile in Panchavati. Kapoor’s presence is marked by a sense of restraint and grace, capturing the calm strength and moral clarity often associated with the character. The performance, even in these brief flashes, leans heavily into poise and spiritual depth rather than overt dramatization.

The teaser doesn’t stop there. It also offers quick glimpses of other central characters—Sai Pallavi as Sita, Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana, and Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman. However, one of the most talked-about moments comes right at the end: a fleeting yet striking appearance of Yash as Ravana, hinting at a powerful antagonist who will likely command significant attention in the narrative.

Interestingly, despite months of anticipation, the makers had remained tight-lipped about character looks. While a few images of Ranbir Kapoor from the sets had surfaced online earlier, they were neither confirmed nor addressed by the team. This teaser, therefore, serves as the first official visual introduction to the film’s world.

Even before the teaser dropped, the film had already built considerable buzz. A special preview was reportedly screened for a select audience in Los Angeles, attended by director Nitesh Tiwari, producer Namit Malhotra, and Ranbir Kapoor himself. That early unveiling only added to the growing sense that Ramayana is being crafted with a global audience in mind.

Producer Namit Malhotra has been vocal about the film’s scale and ambition. With a combined budget of approximately ₹4,000 crore for its two parts, the project stands as one of the most expensive film ventures ever undertaken. According to Malhotra, the journey began nearly seven years ago, at a time when such a масштаб seemed almost unimaginable for an Indian production. Yet, he maintains that while the film is undeniably ambitious, it is being executed with careful planning rather than excess.

The comparisons being drawn are equally telling. The film has been described as India’s answer to large-scale cinematic epics like The Lord of the Rings and Avatar, with Malhotra even referencing films like Gladiator when speaking about its vision. The goal, it appears, is not just to retell a familiar story, but to present it on a scale that resonates globally.

Music plays a crucial role in that vision. The project brings together two giants—A.R. Rahman and Hans Zimmer—in a collaboration that has already sparked curiosity. For Zimmer, this marks his entry into Hindi cinema, while Rahman has described the process as both exciting and daunting. The challenge, as he explains, lies in reimagining something deeply rooted in cultural memory while still offering a fresh, universal experience. Their combined effort aims to bridge tradition and innovation, creating a soundscape that feels both rooted and expansive.

The film’s release strategy further underscores its epic ambitions. Ramayana will unfold in two parts, with the first installment scheduled to hit theatres in October 2026, just ahead of Diwali. The second part is set for a Diwali 2027 release, allowing the story to breathe across a larger narrative canvas.

The ensemble cast adds further weight to the project. Alongside Ranbir Kapoor, the film features Sai Pallavi, Sunny Deol, Ravie Dubey, and Yash in pivotal roles—each bringing their own screen presence to characters that are deeply embedded in cultural consciousness.

In many ways, Ramayana arrives at a crucial moment. Large-scale adaptations of mythological epics carry both immense potential and significant risk, as seen with recent attempts in the genre. But with its scale, talent, and carefully controlled rollout, this version appears determined to chart a different path.

For now, the teaser offers just a glimpse—but it is enough to signal that this is not merely a retelling. It is an attempt to transform one of India’s most enduring stories into a cinematic experience designed for both national and global audiences.
