2022 hasn’t been the best year for movies, especially on the big screen. The reason for the failure is the over saturation & low content quality of the movies or is the shift in viewing pattern of cinema is a debatable topic. Both the factors can’t be denied for the underperformance of films. We can’t discount the fact that post the pandemic people prefer watching movies in the comfort of their homes. The theater going experience has seen a drastic drop. However, it doesn’t mean that nobody watches movies on the big screen. A good movie mostly works, be it in theaters or on the big screen. There were few decent movies which were released this year. So, here are our picks for the top 12 movies of 2022.

Top Gun: Maverick
Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick is a typical yet refreshing high budget Hollywood action flick. The big budget movie was a sequel of Tom’s movie Top Gun. The stakes were very high as the action star was making a comeback in the franchise after decades. But the crowd puller didn’t disappoint anyone and accomplished the impossible looking mission. People witnessed a true old school Hollywood action flick theatrical experience. The mega budget movie was made to entertain and is only meant for theaters (if you wanna get the real feel of the film).
The Northman
The Northman is a story of young prince who is on a mission to take revenge of his father’s murder. The movie is written by Sjón and Robert Eggers and directed by Robert Eggers. The main characters in the movie are played by Alexander Skarsgård, Nicole Kidman, Claes Bang and Ethan Hawke. The movie was also well received by the critics and the masses.
The Worst Person in the World
The Worst Person in the World is a movie which revolves around its primary character named Julie and showcases her struggles. The movie gives us a look at Julie’s love life and also shows her struggles in finding a career path. If you just go by the storyline and experience, ‘The Worst Person in the World’ has to be one of the movies of the year. The movie has also been nominated for several prestigious awards. It’s written by Joachim Trier in association with Eskil Vogt and directed by Joachim Trier. Actor Renate Reinsve who portrayed the character of Julie has given a stellar performance in the movie.
Black Adam
Starring “Dwayne Johnson” as a superhuman for the first time. This movie got it’s commercial success worldwide. Although this movie has its flaws but it was entertaining. According to Dwayne Johnson Instagram post made on October 18, it took him 15 years to play his favorite character in Dc universe and made the project possible.
The Batman
The Batman was one of the most highly anticipated and talked about movies of 2022. There was a lot of discussion about the casting of the movie. The movie and Pattinson were constantly questioned and compared to t6he predecessors of the franchise. One thing Matt Reeves (the director) did was to not compete or follow the old installments. Matt’s Batman and Pattinson’s portrayal of the Bat was unique and different from the previous installments. Which made this movie so special and a treat for the DC fans.
Everything Everywhere All at Once
Everything Everywhere All at Once is a mindblowing and crazy ride. The movie establishes the true multiverse kind of effect. It excites you, confuses you and most importantly engages & entertains you. The movie is written and directed by the duo of Dan Kwan & Daniel Scheinert. The action, adventure, comedy genre movie is a highly rated & recommended movie for people who wish to watch something unique.
Turning Red
If you just wanna relax, sitback and watch something fun animated movie then ‘Turning Red’ is a perfect pick for you. The animated movie is directed by Domee Shi. Turning Red is a story about Meilian, a thirteen year old girl. Meilian turns into a giant red panda wherever she gets too excited. This is the crux of the story which sets up all the exciting and funny events of the film. The film can also be enjoyed with kids and family.
Nope
Jordan Peele’s Nope won’t disappoint you if you are a fan of his previous works. The horror mystery movie is not everyone’s cup of tea but is a perfect watch for people who are into this genre and prefer such mysterious horror sci fi movies. Jordan takes us into the mysterious and terrifying world of aliens. The movie is filled with witty dialogues, scary scenes and also showcases human relationships.
Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers
This animated movie arrived 13 years after the end of the very popular tv show ‘Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers’. This somewhat creates a nostalgia for the animated adventure movie. Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers is directed by Akiva Schaffer and the movie is written by the duo of Dan Gregor and Doug Mand. In the movie Andy Samberg has given voice for Dale’s character and John Mulanery has given voice for Chip’s character.
Elvis
The 2022 film ‘Elvis’ is the biography of the iconic and legendary star Elvis Presley. The musical drama showcases Presley’s journey from his childhood to becoming one of the most iconic figures in the American entertainment world. It is written by the trio of Baz Luhrmann, Sam Bromell and Craig Pearcer. The movie is directed by Baz Luhrmann. In the movie Tom Hanks plays the role of Colonel Tom Parker and Austin Butler brilliantly portrayed the character of Elvis.
RRR
This may not come as a surprise any more. RRR has made its presence felt on the global stage. The over the top epic is an engaging and entertaining tale of two heroes cum friends who fight injustice in their own ways. The Indian movie is long (a 3 hour watch) but never loses its grip. The gripping storyline and pilots will always keep you hooked & engaged. It is directed by one of India’s best directors ‘S.S. Rajamouli’ who’s known for his larger than life epic films. RRR has Jr. NTR and Ram Charan in the main leads. The movie is definitely worth watching, at least once.
Avatar: The way of water
This movie is without a doubt going to be the best movie of the year. Avatar sequel is made after 13 years, it’s first movie came out in 2009. Avatar: The way of water is directed, produced and written by James Cameron along with others like ( Rick Jaffa, Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, Shane Salerno ). With the budget of around 250 million dollars this movies is the most expensive movie of all time. After Avatar: The way of water, three more movies from this sequel is going to be release in Dec 2024, Dec 2026 and in Dec 2028, respectively.
