Acura vehicles – Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Â
Marvel and Acura entered into a partnership for the TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., designating Acura cars as the official vehicle for the show’s agents. This collaboration extended to other Marvel films such as Captain America: The First Avenger, Thor, and The Avengers, where Acura cars were also prominently displayed. Along with product placement, the collaboration also included a commercial video and two promotional websites. One of the websites features promotional videos for the webpage itself.
Audi – Iron Man
A partnership between Audi and Marvel was established after the release of the first Iron Man film. Throughout the various installments of the Iron Man franchise, Audi vehicles such as the Audi R8, Audi R8 Spyder, Audi R8 e-tron, Audi A8L, Audi S7 Sportback, Audi S5 Coupe, and the Audi Q7 have made appearances on screen. An exclusive comic, titled Audi Iron Man 2: Fist of Iron, was also released. When Avengers: Age of Ultron premiered, even more models were introduced, including the Audi R8 V10 Plus (2016), Audi TTS (2015), and Audi A3 Cabriolet (2015). The following year, in Ant-Man, an Audi A3 Saloon (2015) had a brief cameo. In Captain America: Civil War, the Audi R8 V10 Plus (2016) returned along with the Audi A4 (2016), Audi A8 (2016), Audi Concept Prologue, and the Audi SQ7 (2016), which was featured in a car chase scene.
Coca-Cola – Ant-Man and Hulk
In an exciting showdown, Marvel’s smallest and biggest superheroes, Astonishing Ant-Man and the Incredible Hulk, race to get their hands on the only Coca-Cola Mini left in the fridge. Despite their varying sizes, both characters understand the need for refreshment when feeling parched. The commercial presents an epic chase between the two heroes, each determined to claim the last remaining Coke Mini. Who will come out victorious in this epic struggle for refreshment?
Burger King – Iron Man
In the film Iron Man, after breaking free from the Ten Rings hideout in Afghanistan and returning to the United States, Tony Stark, played by Robert Downey Jr., makes a stop at Burger King to grab a cheeseburger on his way to a surprise press conference. The scene is notable for its depiction of Stark’s nonchalant attitude toward his recent life-threatening experience and his love for fast food.
Interestingly, in a separate interview, Robert Downey Jr. revealed that Burger King played a positive role in his personal life as well. The actor, who has struggled with drug addiction in the past, credited the fast-food chain with helping him overcome his addiction. Although it’s unclear exactly how Burger King helped Downey Jr., it’s possible that the simple pleasure of indulging in a burger may have brought some comfort and stability during a difficult time in his life.
Atari – Spider-Man
The Green Goblin, holding a pumpkin bomb, jumps into view and taunts Spider-Man, who is playing his new Parker Brothers video game on a New York City rooftop, attempting to disarm the villain’s time bombs. The Goblin succeeds in unnerving Spider-Man, causing his video game character to fall to a presumed death. As the villain exits, Spidey breaks the fourth wall, questioning whether he can handle the action. The costumes used for this commercial were the same ones used by Marvel for promotions, and the Goblin’s appearance is impressive. Despite not being perfect, the game was one of the better ones available for the Atari 2600, and it sparked a trend of high-quality Spider-Man video games that persists today.
Dunkin’ Donuts – Captain America
To coincide with the release of Paramount Pictures’ Captain America: The First Avenger, Dunkin’ Donuts has created a unique treat. The Captain America doughnut is the first star-shaped doughnut the chain has ever produced and is filled with jelly, topped with vanilla icing, and sprinkled with red, white, and blue colors. Additionally, the fried-dough chain will offer a Stars & Stripes doughnut with red icing and sprinkles, and a limited-edition Coolatta served in a “First Avenger Tri-Cup” with three separate compartments for different beverage flavors. This promotion is an interesting and somewhat perplexing tie-in for the summer movie season.
Hyundai – Ant-Man and the Wasp
Several cars from Hyundai were promoted and featured in stunts for both Ant-Man and the Wasp and Marvel’s Netflix series. One car that stood out was a highly customized Hyundai Veloster in Ant-Man and the Wasp, and equipped with side exhaust pipes. The vehicle was prominently featured in the movie, and two commercials were produced to promote it. The partnership between Hyundai and Marvel Studios highlights the increasing trend of product placement in movies and TV shows, as companies seek to capitalize on the popularity of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and its characters.
Renault – Hulk
Renault created a unique commercial exclusively for Brazil to showcase their new car, the Renault Kwid. The ad features Hulk saving the city center of São Paulo from a satellite that could cause mass destruction. Meanwhile, a man driving the Kwid follows Hulk’s path to save victims in a building and successfully navigates various obstacles using the car’s capabilities. Eventually, Hulk destroys the satellite, and the man saves the victims, but it is revealed that it was all in the man’s imagination as he had been reading a Hulk leaflet while driving. This was the first commercial shot in Brazil in partnership with Marvel Studios, and it highlights the car’s reliability and durability in challenging situations.
Lexus – Black Panther
Lexus sponsored the film Black Panther and provided high-performance cars including the LC500 and GS-F. The LC500 gained popularity and was featured in the Black Panther comic “Soul of a Machine,” with Lexus creating two Black Panther-inspired LC’s. A SuperBowl commercial showcased the LS500 Luxury Saloon. The former CEO of Lexus expressed hopes that Black Panther would make the brand as iconic as Iron Man made Audi.
Dr Pepper – Iron Man
As part of the promotion for the Stark Expo in Iron Man 2, Dr Pepper set up a pavilion at the event where visitors could play as Iron Man by visiting their website. The company also released special edition cans featuring characters from the movie. This marketing strategy was repeated for The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron, where Dr Pepper cans featuring characters from the movies were made available in stores. The goal of this campaign was to promote the films and the brand by creating a unique and engaging experience for fans of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
