After nearly three decades of death-defying stunts and global espionage, Tom Cruise has officially confirmed that Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will mark his last outing as the iconic IMF agent Ethan Hunt. The film, which made its debut at the Cannes Film Festival last week, had its U.S. premiere in New York on Sunday night, continuing its international promotional tour.
“It’s the Final!” – Cruise Confirms Ethan Hunt’s Farewell
On the red carpet in New York, Cruise spoke to The Hollywood Reporter and laid all doubts to rest, stating, “It’s the final! It’s not called ‘final’ for nothing.” This eighth installment of the high-octane franchise closes the book on a role that began in 1996 with Brian De Palma’s Mission: Impossible and evolved into one of the most celebrated action sagas in film history.
Despite past comments where Cruise said he hoped to keep making Mission: Impossible films into his 80s—citing inspiration from Harrison Ford—he has since clarified his true intentions. “I actually said I’m going to make movies into my 80s; actually, I’m going to make them into my 100s,” Cruise said jokingly, before firmly adding, “I will never stop.”
No Retirement in Sight for Cruise
While this may be the end of the line for Ethan Hunt, Cruise is far from slowing down. Now 62, the four-time Oscar nominee made it clear that retirement is nowhere on his radar.
“I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I’m excited,” he said, radiating enthusiasm for the craft that has defined his life.
Cruise emphasized that his passion for storytelling and filmmaking only continues to grow. Reflecting on his Mission: Impossible journey, he noted, “There’s been so many levels of reward — with the filmmakers I’ve collaborated with, the crews, the people, the cultures we’ve worked in. Everything I’ve learned and continue to learn… it’s been exceptional.”
Behind the Scenes: A Bond Between Actor and Director
Director Christopher McQuarrie, who returns for his fourth Mission: Impossible film, praised Cruise as a collaborative force on and off set. “He’s the most giving, most game — he’s down for anything,” McQuarrie said. “Whether or not he understands something, he’s fully willing to jump into something, whether he feels it or not. He’s a great teacher and a great student.”
Cruise also shared that his preparation for the franchise’s infamous stunts includes plenty of rituals. “There’s a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive,” he joked, acknowledging the immense physical and mental planning behind every dangerous feat.

A Star-Studded Farewell
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning brings back fan favorites and introduces new faces. The ensemble cast includes Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Greg Tarzan Davis, Angela Bassett, Esai Morales, Henry Czerny, Charles Parnell, Holt McCallany, Nick Offerman, Tramell Tillman, and Katy O’Brian.
With high-stakes action, emotional depth, and a proper send-off to a beloved character, the film is already generating buzz as a fitting finale to a legendary run.
End of an Era, Not the End of Cruise
Though Ethan Hunt may be hanging up his IMF badge, Tom Cruise is not fading from the spotlight. If anything, The Final Reckoning signals the end of one chapter — and the exciting beginning of whatever the tireless actor decides to do next.
As Cruise put it best, “I love just making movies.” And clearly, he has no plans to stop anytime soon.
