The Road to Haven: A Century of Grief
Our story begins over a century ago, twenty miles outside of New Orleans. The air is thick with the scent of pine and the weight of history. We meet Slaughter Freedman, a man who carries himself with the quiet dignity of a veteran. A former Buffalo Soldier and U.S. Marshal in the Oklahoma Territory, Slaughter is a man who has seen too much death, and he carries it with him—literally.
He is traveling a lonely road, pulling a wagon with a mahogany coffin adorned with a gold cross. Inside is his son, whom he is looking to bury in a place where he can rest peacefully. But the road to salvation is never easy. He is intercepted by a group of bandits who claim the path is a “toll road”. These men—Caleb, Virgil, and two others—are the worst kind of vultures, preying on those who are already grief-stricken.
Despite the guns leveled at him, Slaughter remains remarkably calm. He even offers to support “local commerce” in the interest of keeping the peace. But when Virgil reaches for the coffin, Slaughter’s tone shifts. He warns them that his son is inside and that laying a finger on that mahogany box will be their final mistake. He speaks with the authority of a “Revelator,” a man who has transcended the ordinary.
When the bandits ignore his warning, we see why Slaughter Freedman was so confident. In a flash of motion, he reveals his mutation: he has four powerful arms. Before the “peckerwoods” can even process what they are seeing, Slaughter draws multiple revolvers and cuts them down with surgical precision. As he puts it, the motto of a Marshal is “Justice, Integrity, and Service”—and keeping murderous bandits off the road fulfills that mission perfectly.
Resurrection in the Bayou
After the dust settles and four new graves are dug (because Slaughter is nothing if not thorough), something incredible happens. As Slaughter prepares to continue his journey, he notices the ground nearby is moving. He realizes the bandits hadn’t just been robbing travelers; they had buried someone alive.
Slaughter digs into the mud and pulls out a man who should be dead. This stranger has been poisoned and shot multiple times, a “hell of a death” that simply didn’t stick. This is our first look at Logan—Wolverine—in this era. He is broken, poisoned, and barely conscious, but his healing factor is fighting a desperate battle for his life. Slaughter, seeing a fellow traveler in need, loads the stranger into his wagon alongside his son and continues toward a sanctuary known as Haven House.
Present Day: Training and Trouble at Haven House
The story then shifts to the present day, bringing us back to the current roster of the Uncanny X-Men at the modern Haven House. The mood here is lighter, at least initially. Ransom, Jitter, Deathdream, and Calico are out on the field, ostensibly for training. Ransom suggested soccer as a way to build teamwork and agility, though Jubilee suspects they’re really just trying to avoid another grueling session in the Danger Room.
The scene is a wonderful character study. Deathdream seems terrified of the grass, while Calico is content to count clouds instead of playing defense. Jitter, meanwhile, is showing off her incredible reflexes, leading her team to a quick victory that Jubilee finds suspiciously fast.
Amidst this youthful energy, Logan is preparing to go into town. He’s dressed for a night out, but he isn’t looking for a party. He needs a “designated conscience,” and he asks Jubilee to accompany him. Jubilee, always ready for a distraction, agrees, even if it means paying for the appetizers.
The Protector’s Watch: Mala and the Creep
In town, they head to a local bar where a woman named Mala works. Logan has been coming here for weeks, not to drink, but to watch over her. Mala is being relentlessly harassed by a local creep named Emery, a man who has been stalking her and making her life miserable.
Emery is the kind of villain everyone recognizes: arrogant, entitled, and cruel. He even mocks Mala for losing her parents during Hurricane Katrina, using her trauma as a way to get under her skin. When he tries to get physical, Logan steps in. With Jubilee providing a “little distraction,” Logan confronts Emery and his friends.
The confrontation is brief but terrifying for Emery. Logan doesn’t need to pop his claws to be a threat; his presence alone is enough to send the message. He gives Emery a choice: a “stern warning or a battlefield tracheotomy”. Not surprisingly, Emery chooses to flee. Mala, however, isn’t entirely grateful. She’s noticed Logan following her and demands to know why a man with white hair and fangs is so invested in her safety.
The History of Haven: A Place for Moonflyers
The story moves back into the past, explaining the connection between Logan and Mala’s family. Slaughter Freedman brought Logan to the original Haven House, a refuge for “mutates” and “moonflyers” run by Michael St. Juniors and the mysterious Mother Witchfire.
Michael is initially skeptical of the trouble Slaughter might be bringing with him, especially after Slaughter admits to killing four white men. But the bond of shared grief and the need for sanctuary wins out. Michael lost his own family because they “knew how to live, not how to fight,” and he has dedicated his life to ensuring that never happens to anyone else.
Logan’s recovery is slow. He is “worn slap out” and has been “eye to eye with the devil”. For two weeks, he heals under Mother Witchfire’s care, eventually regaining enough strength to help with “house raising” around the property. He begins to find a sense of peace and community with these people who, like him, are hunted by the world for what they are.
The Arrival of Lady Henrietta and the Threat of the Mob
The peace of Haven House is shattered by the arrival of Lady Henrietta. She is a woman of immense power and poise, fleeing from early precursors of the Sentinels. She possesses the “power of obsidian,” a dark and formidable ability that makes her a natural leader for the community.
Her arrival coincides with a crisis in the nearby town. The four men Slaughter killed have been discovered, and the town is looking for someone to blame. They’ve set their sights on two young sharecropper kids, Benjamin and Selah. A lynch mob is forming, and the sheriff is more than willing to hand the children over to the “whitecappers” to keep the peace.
When the news reaches Haven House, Lady Henrietta is clear: “There will be no lynching of children. Not if I have to go alone”. But she isn’t alone. Slaughter Freedman, Logan, and Michael St. Juniors join her, forming the group that would come to be known as the Regulators.
The Regulators’ Justice: A Night of Reckoning
The climax of the historical narrative is a powerful display of mutant solidarity against the horrors of racial and bigoted violence. The Regulators ride into town just as the mob is preparing the ropes.
The confrontation is electric. The townspeople, who saw themselves as a righteous mob, are suddenly faced with “monsters” they cannot comprehend. Slaughter’s four arms, Logan’s feral intensity, and Lady Henrietta’s obsidian shadows turn the tables completely. Henrietta’s power is described as a force that makes grown men cry and the mob scream in panic.
They don’t just save the kids; they deliver a warning that echoes through the decades. Slaughter, the former Marshal, tells the sheriff that there will be no more mobs, or next time, it will be their homes the Regulators come for. He makes it clear that while the people of Haven are decent and God-fearing, he is neither of those things.
The children are rescued, and for a brief moment, justice is served in a land where the law is often “broke and hateful”.
A Legacy Continued: Rain or Shine
Returning to the present, the pieces of the puzzle finally come together for Mala. Logan explains that her great-great-grandfather was John Slaughter Freedman. He tells her that Slaughter saved him from a “hole” over a century ago—both the physical hole he was buried in and the spiritual hole of his own grief.
Logan reveals that he has been watching over Mala’s family for generations as a way to repay that debt. He tells her about the “tree of grief” that used to stand outside her window, and how a friend of his (Henrietta) healed the wound before it could fester. He gives Mala his number, telling her that he is here for the next one of them who needs him.
As Logan prepares to leave, the rain begins to fall. In the past, we see Logan saying goodbye to Slaughter and Michael. Slaughter asks him to stay, noting that the kids love him, but Logan has “business with those that poisoned me”. Before he leaves, Logan carves a symbol into the door jamb: an “X,” which in the “muta code” of the time stood for “safe house”.
The issue ends with a beautiful, poignant resonance between the past and the present. In the final panels, Logan reflects on the enduring promise of protection and community. As the storm clouds gather over modern Louisiana, he looks at Mala and offers a phrase that encapsulates his eternal vigil:
“RAIN OR SHINE, DARLIN’. RAIN OR SHINE.”
