The Rules of Brainstorming

The Rules of Brainstorming: Alex Osborn created the idea of “brainstorming” in order to facilitate group ideation. While brainstorming was initially intended to be a collaborative activity, nowadays many people just refer to individual idea generating or thinking as brainstorming. If you want to start at the beginning, Applied Imagination: Principles and Procedures of Creative Problem-Solving by Alex Osborn is a well-known foundational book. If guidelines are presented before the brainstorming session begins, it is possible for a group to produce ideas together in a powerful way.

What are the Rules for Brainstorming?

Before the session starts, the facilitator announces the brainstorming guidelines that will be followed.
Osborn named these four guidelines as follows

  • No Review or criticism of ideas is allowed in order to encourage people to develop ideas rather than argue for them.
  • On the theory that these may frequently include truthful nuggets that might be gleaned during the analysis session, participants are urged to propose the most absurd answers they can think of.
  • We voice as many thoughts as we can in the hope that quality will emerge from quantity.

  • The session’s participants make an effort to expand, incorporate, and develop ideas that have already been expressed.

IDEO Brainstorming Rules

Information about design thinking and human-centered design is increasingly available from IDEO. The IDEO brainstorming guidelines are widely recognized in the innovation world. Keep in mind how these principles build on Osborn’s initial instructions for brainstorming session activities and some of their highly practical, straightforward language that is focused on taking action.

  • Defer judgment: In order for people to build on one other’s brilliant ideas, creative places must be judgment-free environments.
  • Encourage Wild Ideas: Support the most original thoughts. Often, there is little distinction between outrageous and genius.
  • Build on other People’s Ideas: Use “and” instead of “but” wherever possible; It promotes positivity and inclusivity and generates a tonne of ideas.
  • Keep the Discussion on Topic: Make an effort to keep the conversation on the topic. Divergence is beneficial, but you must continue to focus on your goal.
  • .One Conversation at a Time: This can be challenging, especially when there are many creative people present in the same space, but always keep the challenging topic in mind and how to stay on course.
