Paramount Pictures has officially taken the slingshot reins from Sony and is gearing up to launch The Angry Birds Movie 3 in theaters on January 29, 2027. This marks a new chapter in the animated franchise based on Rovio Entertainment’s smash-hit mobile game, co-produced by SEGA.

With a fresh home at Paramount, an impressive ensemble cast, and returning creative leads, the third installment looks set to revitalize the franchise after a quieter second outing.

Original Cast Returns Alongside Star-Studded Newcomers

Fans of the first two films will be thrilled to know that original voice actors Jason Sudeikis (Red), Josh Gad (Chuck), Rachel Bloom (Silver), and Danny McBride (Bomb) are all returning to reprise their beloved roles.

Joining them is a vibrant mix of new talent, including:

  • Emma Myers (Wednesday, A Minecraft Movie)
  • Keke Palmer (Nope, Lightyear)
  • Tim Robinson (I Think You Should Leave)
  • Lily James (Baby Driver, Pam & Tommy)
  • Marcello Hernandez (SNL)
  • Walker Scobell (Percy Jackson and the Olympians)
  • Sam Richardson (Ted Lasso, Veep)
  • Anna Cathcart (XO, Kitty)
  • Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever)
  • Nikki Glaser, James Austin Johnson, and even Psalm West—yes, the son of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West—round out this surprising and comedic lineup.

A New Studio Partnership and Production Team

Unlike the first two movies which were released by Sony Pictures, The Angry Birds Movie 3 marks a new collaboration between Paramount Pictures, Rovio Entertainment, and SEGA. Production is being handled by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios, Flywheel Media, One Cool Group, and Dentsu.

The film is directed by John Rice, who previously helmed the original Angry Birds Movie. The screenplay is penned by Thurop Van Orman, who directed the second film and is known for his quirky animated style (The Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack). They’re joined by producers John Cohen, Dan Chuba, and Carla Connor.

The Animation and Music Dream Team Returns

Creative work for the film is in the hands of DNEG Animation, a studio renowned for high-quality visuals. Jeanie Chang serves as the production designer, Francesca Natale as the character designer, Vadim Bazhanov leads story development, and Sarah K. Reimers takes on lead editing.

Music lovers can also rejoice as Grammy-winning composer Heitor Pereira (Despicable Me, Minions, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish) returns to score the film, maintaining the energetic and whimsical tone the franchise is known for.

A Franchise That Refuses to Fizzle

Despite The Angry Birds Movie 2 underperforming at the box office with $147.8 million globally (compared to the original’s $352 million), the franchise has maintained strong streaming numbers. In total, the Angry Birds films have earned over $500 million worldwide, signaling ongoing interest and a potential for a major comeback.

As Paramount and SEGA continue to strike gold with their Sonic the Hedgehog movies and with the Minecraft Movie making waves at the box office, now appears to be the perfect time for The Angry Birds Movie 3 to take flight.

Building on a Legacy Beyond Gaming

From mobile game sensation to global merchandise and cinematic presence, the Angry Birds brand has evolved into a multi-platform entertainment empire. According to Rovio CEO Alex Pelletier-Normand, the upcoming film is the result of a “deeply collaborative effort” aimed at delighting both loyal fans and new audiences.

Producer John Cohen added, “Not only do we have Jason, Josh, Rachel, and Danny returning, but they’re surrounded by an all-star ensemble of comedic talent. These are some of the funniest people out there today.”
