In Framed: Astonishing True Stories of Wrongful Convictions, John Grisham collaborates with Jim McCloskey, founder of Centurion Ministries, to shine a light on the dark underbelly of the American justice system. Known for his gripping legal thrillers, Grisham steps into the realm of nonfiction with McCloskey to share ten harrowing stories of individuals who were wrongfully convicted. These tales are not only chilling but highlight how systemic racism, flawed forensics, and misconduct have caused people to lose decades of their lives behind bars.

A Harrowing Collection of True Stories

The book features ten different cases, each recounting the wrongful conviction of innocent individuals. One of the most heart-wrenching Stories is that of Cameron Todd Willingham, a Texas man wrongfully executed in 2004 for the alleged arson that killed his three daughters. The story is particularly disturbing because new forensic evidence proved that the fire was not an act of arson, but the findings came too late to save Willingham. The inclusion of this case serves as a grim reminder of the irreversible consequences of wrongful convictions.

Other Stories, such as that of the “Norfolk Four,” Navy sailors who were eventually awarded nearly $5 million after their wrongful convictions were overturned, add layers of complexity and redemption to the book. These men, wrongly accused of rape and murder, spent years fighting for their freedom. As noted by Publishers Weekly, the authors’ meticulous research and storytelling offer an “equal mix of fascination and frustration” to readers.

The Role of Jim McCloskey and Centurion Ministries

Jim McCloskey plays a pivotal role in these stories. As the founder of Centurion Ministries, the first U.S. organization focused on exonerating wrongly convicted individuals, McCloskey’s hands-on experience lends the book a deeply personal touch. His relentless pursuit of justice has led to the exoneration of over 60 innocent people. The collaboration between Grisham, with his talent for crafting suspenseful narratives, and McCloskey’s detailed knowledge of these real-life cases, results in a powerful blend of storytelling and legal analysis.

In one case, McCloskey dives deep into the story of Mark Jones, a soldier wrongfully convicted for a murder that took place during his bachelor party. The case took years to resolve, but McCloskey’s dedication helped clear Jones’s name. The book underscores the long, arduous process of overturning wrongful convictions, with McCloskey’s perseverance shining through each case.

Systemic Flaws in the Justice System

A major theme throughout Framed is the systemic issues plaguing the American justice system. Grisham and McCloskey highlight how unreliable witness testimony, coerced confessions, and faulty forensic methods have led to these tragic outcomes. They also delve into the underlying racial biases and corrupt practices that make it so difficult to reverse wrongful convictions. These stories bring to light the human cost of a flawed system where the innocent can spend decades behind bars while the real perpetrators remain free.

The authors emphasize the uphill battle faced by those wrongfully convicted, as the legal system is often unwilling to admit mistakes. For instance, in cases like that of Cameron Todd Willingham, even overwhelming evidence of innocence can be dismissed, leading to heartbreaking consequences. Kirkus Reviews praised the book for its empathetic portrayal of the wrongly convicted, calling it a “powerful and infuriating must-read.”

Grisham’s Storytelling Magic

Grisham’s legal thrillers have long captivated audiences with their suspense and complex legal dilemmas. In Framed, he brings those same storytelling abilities to nonfiction. The pacing, tension, and drama found in his novels are mirrored in this book, making these real-life stories as compelling as his fiction. As noted by Powell’s Books, Grisham’s contribution to the book adds an element of “page-turning suspense,” which helps engage readers even when faced with the grim realities of these cases.

Conclusion: A Must-Read for Legal and True Crime Enthusiasts

Framed is not just a collection of stories about wrongful convictions—it’s a call to action. The book exposes the failures of the justice system and gives voice to those who have suffered unimaginable injustices. For readers interested in legal dramas, true crime, or social justice, this book is both informative and heart-wrenching. Grisham and McCloskey have created a work that is as gripping as it is sobering, reminding us that the fight for justice is far from over.

This deeply researched book will leave readers both outraged and inspired, making it a must-read for anyone concerned with fairness in the justice system.

The book humanizes the victims, dissects the mind of the presumed killer, and provides a glimpse into the conservative landscape of northern Idaho. It raises thought-provoking questions about the changing nature of homicide investigations in the era of instant information. With FBI involvement and extensive resources, the case unfolds with a mix of tragedy and determination, highlighting the lives lost on that fateful November morning.

When we talk about serial killing, our body gets shivers. It is really impossible to contemplate the nature of these heinous crimes.
Last Call By Elon Green is A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York”. It is the true crime story of four dead bodies found in plastic trash containers, in bins along major streets in New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

Last Call By Elon Green

In the early 1990s the Last Call killer targeted gay men in New York. I’ve read many true crime story over the years, and it’s not difficult to feel sorry. Sorry about the victims and the friends and family they left behind. I felt even more bad after reading this book and knowing the victims’ sexuality. As after knowing sexuality very little attention was paid to the crimes in those days or even now. What is additionally sad is knowing there are undoubtedly other undiscovered victims of this serial killer.

In case you don’t consider the Acknowledgements and Notes. Last Call: A True Story of Love, Lust, and Murder in Queer New York is a little more than 200 pages. Which I think is very short for a true crime book particularly one including multiple crimes. However, I think this book describes the details of the crime, the victims, and the killer, very well. Along with that this book also explains much about the community in New York during the 80s and 90s.

The writer works brilliantly painting the image of what life resembled for a gay man during that time. You have the AIDs epidemic, the fear of being outed if you were closeted, widespread homophobia, and hate crime. These where crimes that weren’t taken very seriously by the overall population or law enforcement. It is a tragic and infuriating reading however one that is positively significant in order not to forget the history.

I think Last Call By Elon Green is a good read. However, it is not the best true crime book I have ever perused. I had a feeling that I was getting a preview of the victim’s life and afterward the writer would proceed onward to the following one. There were many names raised in the book, not only victims, but there are others. Others that were part of the NYC social scene and it was troublesome to keep track of everybody. I likewise was surprised the authors hardly gave any time to the court case. That is simply a minor issue however as generally speaking I discovered it to be an entrancing read.

The Psychopath By Mary Turner Thomson is the true story of Will Jordan. A sociopath-insane person, who left ladies in dire straits in both the UK, and the US. His style was to attract them, commit bigamy in most cases, impregnate them, take their money from them and afterwards abandon them.

In “The Psychopath” author “Mary Turner Thomson” not just tell us her own story, but also of different women victimized by Will Jordan. Women who was also apparently a pedophile. His path of victims prompted tragedy including a suicide. The victims united together through Facebook and shared information about the crimes. Crimes which in past were often concealed out of shame and embarrassment.

The Facebook group likewise gave data on Will Jordan, who has been convicted and imprisoned. He was attempting to have his sentence decreased to least. This man was not just a sociopath, he was considered a maniac since his score on the size of abnormal responses and feelings was so high. As a result of the Facebook group, eight more ladies testified alongside one lady against the reduced sentence. The power of web-based media in communication, exchange of crucial information and collaboration can’t be over-focused. An interesting case.

There were Several great point made by the author:

” Why me? ” How did this man discover ways to convince, extort and trick such countless women? Their weakness lie in the maltreatment which happened with them in childhood. He recognize a victim then utilizing his mind and ability to control, search out and work on these ladies shortcomings. He prepared his victims with a specialist’s ability. This insane person utilizes dramatization ( ” Poor me ” ” Investigator ” and ” Intimidator ” ) as a range of mental control procedures to player down the victim’s capacity to resist.

Will Jordan additionally engaged in self-hurt. This is something I’ve never read probably as a quality of this kind of sociopath-maniac.

The Psychopath by Mary Turner Thomson completely frightened me that there are such individuals on the loose.

Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted is Fascinating, gripping, and so well written. Just after graduating from college, Suleika Jaouad was prepared to take on the world. She had moved to Paris and to pursue her fantasy about turning into a war correspondence. Suleika had no idea that life would set her up for an alternate sort of fight. She started to tingle. Not the little tingle that we as a whole encounter occasionally but a drawn out irritating one that made them wake every day to discover scratch marks on her body. It was persistent and didn’t go away. Then fatigue set in. After many physical check-ups, and just before her twenty-third birthday celebration. She was determined to have Leukemia with a 35 percent possibility of survival.

Life totally changed for her. She came back to her parents, lost her job, her living apartment and her capacity to openly live her life. Moving in and out of the clinic, facing treatments, exhaustion, battling for her life at the same time chronicling her encounters and ailment in the New York Times.

She had numerous who were there for her as help all through her long fight which altered her fantasies, her connections and her life objectives. Cancer not only negatively affected her body, however on her outlook and in addition on those in her life. She specifies in the “Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted” that “Disease is greedy.” It took everything and left her to reborn once more. When she was pronounced “cured” what might life resemble for her? How would you push ahead when those you have met and fortified with are out of the picture? How does such a life changing illness impact your relationship?

I generally discover it out and frequently hard to rate a diary as I would prefer not to rate such individual’s reality and encounters. However, would like to rate the ability of writing and my capacity to identify with or take in something from their journal. Her writing is excellent, and I am awed by her courage in sharing exactly how the cancer ravaged her body. She doesn’t shy sharing the detail.

Clearly, we realize she survives and even got the idea her career objectives transformed. She proceeds to write and wrote an Emmy award-winning segment named “Life Interrupted.” Her wok has been highlighted in magazines, and she has made Isolation Journals. She may not be a war reporter. However, she has had an effect in journalism. Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted, is a moving, interesting and powerful memoir.

In the Garden of Spite tells the thrilling story of Belle Gunness otherwise called the Black Widow of LaPorte. Belle is known as the very first female serial killer in America. I knew nothing about Belle Gunness before I saw this book, however it sounded fascinating and indeed it is fascinating. She was a serial killer whose murderous spree extended from 1884 to 1908. Born as Brynhild Paulsdatter Storseth, she was raised in Norway. Carrying on with an impoverished life as the child of a tenant farmer. After maltreatment because of her father, a nearby boy who got her pregnant. She promised that she would have better, and she would not be subject to men’s torture.

She moved to America, following her sister Nellie, In America she rechristened herself Bella, or Belle. In the Garden of Spite, the story is told from the perspectives of both Belle and Nellie, and this allows us to see not only Belle’s point of view, but Nellie’s too. Nellie swings from persuading herself that all is great to being sure that something is the issue with Belle, that she will need to act against her own sister. Truly, I sort of needed to smack Nellie for dithering a lot and not actually doing anything about Belle. However, I can likewise see where she would have been frightened to really attempt to stop the horror unfurling.

Belle’s troublesome formative years clearly affected her deeply and drew out the worst in her. She is a troublesome character to feel any sort of compassion for. She is grasping, greedy, continually looking for more than what she has. Belle weds a decent man, yet that is not sufficient for her. However, Belle’s craving for good life, the best life, drives her to do awful, severe things. In the Garden of Spite isn’t for the squeamish. As Belle’s killing strategies are not gentle. It is not unnecessarily graphic only for shock value, however there is actually no decent method to write that.

It just boggled my brain as I can not believe that every one of these men could vanish and have their vanishing go fundamentally unchallenged, at least at the beginning. In many occurrences, people appeared to trust Belle that the men had been there, but had gone on elsewhere. However, then I realized that this was before the time of web access, that nobody could sign in and check these men’s credit card activities or telephone records. Camilla Bruce did her research, and the book is very well written. In the Garden of Spite is not a simple read because of the topic, however it is an interesting read.

The Gold Digger by Liz Tolsma is the most recent delivery in the True Colors series. These stories are based on real crimes in American history. I enjoyed The Gold Digger, it is a very well written novel of murders committed in mid 1900’s America. The killer and most victims are genuine people. Now and again it appears to be clear who the killer was yet there is barely enough uncertainty with respect to someone else. The characters are very much characterized through sensible dialogs and activities, and the author’s investigation into the real crime and history of the time show the accuracy of the novel.

Belle has a pig farm that she acquired from her second husband. Twice widowed, she has taken in destitute kids and raised them as her own. Her sister Ingrid is to some degree a newcomer to America, having come from their local Norway five years earlier. Belle bought a building in LaPorte, Indiana, and gifted the storefront and upstairs apartment to Ingrid to open a sweets store. Ingrid is very shy and doesn’t communicate in English well, yet she can’t turn away the gift from her sister. Ingrid’s fantasy is to be a photographer, and this building has a basement she can use as a darkroom.

Belle has advertised for men with an objective of marriage in different Norwegian papers in the Midwest. A few men have come to meet her and see the farm, however every one left soon after appearance. A previous farmhand, Ray, actually hangs out by the farm as he needs to be her next spouse as she had once promised. Despite the fact that she fired him, he is still obsessed with her.

There are not many motorcars in LaPorte; the unfamiliar one recently seen in town and a youthful Norwegian man came to get directions from her. Nils, who owns a motorcar vendor in Detroit, is searching for his sibling Sven, who had gone to Belle’s and has not been heard from since. Their sickly mother is extremely worried, as it isn’t like Sven to be distant so long. Ingrid recalls Sven and his auto, as Sven was an exceptionally decent man who left as the others had. She disclosed to Nils how to discover the farm.

Throughout the following few weeks, Nils, with Ingrid’s assistance, exhausts leads looking for Sven. Jennie, the teenager whom Belle adopted quite a long while back, is gone. Belle professes to have sent her to a school in California yet won’t share her location. Somebody put a fire to the sweet shop with Ingrid sleeping higher up.

All through The Gold Digger the writer’s ability for composing Christian suspense and historical Books is obvious. The suspense is written with greatness as one attempts to find what truly happened to the missing men and other strange events. The characters, confidence, and suspense make this a really commendable expansion to Barbour’s multi-author True Colors series. I highly recommend The Gold Digger to any individual who likes reading true crime novels and is a fan of the author or series.

By – Jess Lourey

Bloodline is inspired by a true story, which truly gave the book intensity for me. It’s set in Lilydale, a similar spot where the writer’s last book, Unspeakable Things, occurred. (Unspeakable Things were likewise inspired by a true story). This novel highlights Joan Harken, a journalist living in Minneapolis in the late ’60s. At the point when Joan finds she’s pregnant, her life partner persuades her to move out of the city and to his old hometown of Lilydale.

All appears to be well from the outset… excessively well. Joan starts to see some abnormal happenings. She doesn’t know anybody from the town except her life partner, however, and she doesn’t know whether she’s going insane or if “there’s something in the community we haven’t sorted out,” to pull a statement the writer included some newspaper stories about the true crime that inspired the Novel.

I would prefer not to give anything away, however the last turn totally blew my mind. Additionally, I adored the period details. They’re exact, yet not overpowering. I figure this book would make an incredible TV show, think True Crime meets Stranger Things. If you like page-turning mysteries, you’ll need to get this one!

Advancement of the characters is amazing. In fact, on the off chance that I were a growing writer, I would be jealous at how the writer sneaks through the different peculiarities that cause individuals to feel so real, even authentic. Few readers may be tested by the apparently disconnected opening chapters.

This book is stuffed with suspense. The writer has a gift for building characters, and transporting the readers into an existence where the story happens. I had an inclination that I was a part of this excursion from the very first page. I would strongly recommend this book to any individual who has the opportunity to finish it in one sitting, because once you start it’s difficult to put down! It’s that chilling and exciting.

By – Gregg Olsen

If You Tell was a disturbing book. Sometimes things that truly have happened are far more terrible than anything we can envision. This is a story of abuse, manipulation, and complete and utter negligence for human torment. Where one woman got off on the emotional and actual agony she could perpetrate on others – basically her children and those nearest to her. How she got away with this for such a long time is a Mystery.

The best novel Gregg Olsen has ever written. It’s the fifth I’ve perused by him and I’ve generally been pretty disappointed as his editors have done an atrocious job, but this one is WAY better introduced. I see it’s been a couple of years since he wrote a real crime book so the break’s done him a lot of good as this one is interesting.

It is a pretty frightening read. Shelly properly is a mother of hell. How on earth a few people do things other individuals can’t even think of, leaving me flabbergasted ! Particularly as she’s a mother. There is a happy ending, however…..her daughters are full-grown and well away from her and I was glad to see it.

Lara is likely the most nicest individual the girls have in their lives. She took a ton on with her children and Shelly appeared to be pretty damaged as of now when Lara encountered her. Her maternal family were a lot of psychos, so I guess she didn’t stand a chance, however it’ll never pardon her later conduct. I additionally enjoyed Shane. He was managed a bleeding horrendous hand himself….I liked Ron, as well and his relationship with Tori was a sweet one.

A few maltreatments Shelly committed really made me wince…..none were lovely, obviously yet she went past the pale. I possessed little energy for her better half, all things considered. Unfortunately, he did not have any spine and consistently supported his wife. He was sort of accepted as a fellow victim by the author as later in life he attempted to redeem himself.
