Survival horror fans, prepare yourselves — the next chapter in the legendary Resident Evil franchise has officially been unveiled. Titled Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth mainline installment in Capcom’s iconic horror series will release on February 27, 2026, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam.

A Surprise Reveal at Summer Game Fest 2025

Capcom made the highly anticipated announcement during Summer Game Fest 2025 in Los Angeles. Fans were initially met with a teaser acknowledging the series’ upcoming 30th anniversary in March 2026, but without any gameplay footage or concrete updates.

Then came the big moment: with just minutes left in the event, a full trailer for Resident Evil Requiem dropped unexpectedly, along with its official title and release date. The announcement served as the show’s dramatic finale, creating a buzz among fans and media alike.

A Bold New Direction for the Franchise

Geoff Keighley, host of Summer Game Fest, described Resident Evil Requiem as “a bold shift for the franchise both in tone and gameplay.” While the series has always leaned into high-tension horror and puzzle-solving, this installment will mix in “high-stakes cinematic action,” suggesting a blend of classic survival horror with more intense, narrative-driven moments.

Capcom has hinted at major technological advancements and deeper gameplay immersion than ever before. This includes richer characters and likely a more expansive game world. The trailer hints at a possible open-world structure, with destroyed cityscapes that might include a revisitable version of Raccoon City, which was canonically destroyed in Resident Evil 3.

Introducing a New Lead: Grace Ashcroft

One of the biggest surprises is the possible introduction of a brand-new protagonist: Grace Ashcroft, an FBI technical analyst. In the trailer, Grace investigates a string of mysterious deaths and is ordered to return to the scene of her mother’s murder — a traumatic setting tied to her own past.

We see Grace strapped to a gurney as an ominous voice calls her “the chosen one.” This raises questions about her role in the larger Resident Evil mythos. Is she the sole playable character, or will returning series veterans like Leon S. Kennedy or Jill Valentine appear?

While Capcom hasn’t confirmed these details, the mystery surrounding Grace’s role — and her connection to a new antagonist — adds an intriguing layer to the narrative.

Capcom Celebrates 30 Years of Resident Evil

As the series approaches its 30th anniversary in March 2026, Resident Evil Requiem will act as both a milestone and a turning point. Capcom game director Jun Takeuchi shared a heartfelt message during the event:

“Thanks to all of you, Resident Evil is about to celebrate its 30th anniversary this coming March. We truly appreciate your continued support. Now, about the latest Resident Evil game you’ve all been waiting for, bear with us a little longer, just a blink of an eye more, and it’ll be ready.”

It’s clear that Capcom is positioning Requiem as a defining entry in the franchise — both a celebration of its roots and a leap into the future.

Requiem for the Dead, Nightmare for the Living

Capcom’s official description calls the game a “Requiem for the dead. Nightmare for the living,” and promises a “heart-stopping experience that will chill you to your core.” That dramatic tagline, combined with promises of groundbreaking visuals and gameplay, indicates that Resident Evil Requiem aims to redefine what fans expect from survival horror.

The game builds on the momentum of Resident Evil Village (2021) and Resident Evil 4 Remake (2023), the latter of which was awarded a rare 10/10 score from IGN and praised as the series’ “most relentlessly exciting adventure.”

What Comes Next?

Capcom has not revealed additional information about the gameplay mechanics, returning characters, or multiplayer features — if any. However, based on the trailer’s tone and cryptic storytelling, Resident Evil Requiem could take the franchise into darker and more complex territory than ever before.

One thing is certain: February 27, 2026, can’t come soon enough for fans of fear.
