Kratos is one of the most popular characters in the gaming world. He is part of the Flagship franchise (God of War) of Play Station. The upcoming game ‘God of War Ragnarok 2022’ is making waves globally and has created a huge buzz amongst the gaming geeks. The game will be released on the 9th of November this year. So let’s take a deep dive into the story of Kratos.
Kratos’ Story in God of War (2005)
The story is about Kratos who serves the Olympian Gods. We see flashbacks that reveal that Kratos was once a Spartan army captain and had won many battles with his army. But he was defeated by a barbaric king. Just before dying he calls out Ares (God of War in Greek Mythology). Kratos promises the God that he will serve Ares if his men are saved and he gets powers to destroy the enemies. Ares then provides the Spartan warrior with a ‘Blade of Chaos’ a pair of chained blades forged in the depths of Tartarus). With these blades Kratos destroys the barbarian king.
Now Kratos, the servant of Ares, goes on another war for his master. He attacks a village occupied by the worshippers of Goddess Athena. Ares tricks and places Kratos’ wife and child in the village. Unknowingly the Spartan Warrior kills his wife and child. The God of War (Ares) thought that this incident would make Kratos a perfect warrior. But this act makes him horrified for killing his family and he strives to seek vengeance against Ares. After this whole incident the Spartan was crushed (bonding the ashes of his family on his skin), which gave him the nickname of ‘Ghost of Sparta’.
However, the game starts from a point where Kratos has been serving the gods for 10 years and has killed Hydra on the behalf of Poseidon. But with passing time he has grown tired of the sufferings, than Athena(Goddess of Wisdom and Warfare) states that if he performs one final act he will be free from his suffering and memory of murdering his family. The Goddess assigns him to kill Ares. But Kratos finds out that there is only one way to kill Ares, and that is the Pandora’s Box, which can only grant him powers to kill a god.
After performing the final act, Kratos saves Athens. But Athena tells that his sins are unforgivable and even gods can’t ease his nightmares. After hearing this Kratos tries to commit suicide but Athena stops him takes him to Mount Olympus. There he gets a reward for his services, Athena crowns Kratons as the new God of War.
Story in God of War II
After becoming the God of War, Kratos joins the Spartan army in an attack on Rhodes. In this battle a giant eagle drains a huge portion of power from him. Then Zeus offers the Blade of Olympus to Kratos. Which is infused by Kratos with his remaining godly powers. With his powers, Kratos defeats Colossus of Rhodes. Eventually the Eagle reveals itself as Zeus. Zeus grants Kratos a final opportunity to re-establish his loyalty to the gods but the Spartan warrior refuses to do so. This leads to Zeus killing Kratos and destroying the Spartan army. After this Kratos is dragged to the underworld but he is saved by the Titan Gaia. After some drastic events Kratos flies to the island of creation. Eventually, Kratos gets access to the island and defeats several monsters and creatures in the way before meeting the Titan Atlas, who reveals that the Blade of Olympus is the key to defeating the Olympian King Zeus.
After all these events, Kratos comes to know that Zeus has destroyed Sparta in his absence. This makes the Spartan warrior furious and looks for vengeance against the Olympian King. Kratos seizes the Blade of Olympus and overpowers him. Athena tries to stop Kratos from killing Zeus, as it would destroy Olympus. But Kratos shows no sign of mercy. Athena sacrifices her life to save Zeus and also tells Kratos about the truth, that he is the son of Zeus.
Zeus fears Kratos as he sees history repeating itself (Zeus had also killed his father Cronos). Kratos declares himself as the King of Gods. Then he travels back to time and saves the Titan from defeat. Then brings them back to the present.
Story in God of War III
After taking control of the Olympus. Kratos, Gaia and other Titans try to destroy the Olympian Gods. Poseidon tries to fight back and attacks the Titian forces. But he gets killed by Kratos and Gaia, his death causes floods in Greece. They even tried to attack Zeus who was at the Olympus peak. But Zeus knocks them off the mountain. Gaia refuses to save Kratos when falling from the mountains. She calls him a pawn for Titans’ revenge and betrays him. Kratos falls into the river and loses the blade of Olympus.
After climbing from the river Kratos is greeted by Athena’s spirit, she gives him the blade of exile and tells him the only way to kill Zeus is extinguishing the flame of Olympus. Then Kratos meets the spirit of Pandora. On the way he meets and murders number of Titans. He kills all the Gods of Olympus who come in the way. And finally reaches Zeus, both Kratos and Zeus are involved in a long fight but in the end Zeus is killed by Kratos. He gets his revenge and his vengeance is complete but feels sad for the state of Greece.
At the end Atheana reappears and demands for the power or thing inside Pandora’s box. Kratos tells him that the box is empty but she refuses to believe him. After all this episode she realizes that the box contained evil spirits captured by Zeus which were freed when Kratos opened it to kill Ares. She also had added the powers of hope in the box. The evil spirits had slowly corrupted the gods. While Kratos was imbued with hope (which had been hidden by his guilt), she demanded him to return the power, but he refused to do so and killed himself so that mankind can have those powers of hope. However, the credit scenes of the game showcases a trail of blood leading away from the abandoned Blade of Olympus, which means that Kratos survives.
