Auli’i Cravalho, the talented 23-year-old actress from Hawaii, made an important decision regarding her role in Disney’s upcoming live-action adaptation of “Moana.” While her co-star Dwayne Johnson announced his return as Maui, Auli’i chose not to reprise her titular role as Moana. Instead, she decided to step behind the scenes and take on the role of an executive producer for the film. In a recent interview with The Wrap, she shared her reasons for this bold decision.

Auli’i Cravalho explained that her decision to step back from the role of Moana was rooted in her desire to promote better representation of Pacific Islanders in the entertainment industry. She emphasized the importance of passing the baton to the next young woman of Pacific Island descent. Auli’i passionately stated that the Pacific Islander community is often underrepresented, and their representation is often inaccurate in the media. She wanted to be a part of changing that narrative.

A Call for More Diversity Behind the Scenes

For Auli’i, promoting representation goes beyond just the actors on screen. She stressed the significance of having diversity in writers’ rooms, directors, and showrunners as well. Auli’i mentioned that Taika Waititi, who initially wrote the script for “Moana,” also advocates for this approach. She believes that real change starts with ensuring diverse voices are involved in every aspect of filmmaking.

Auli’i is determined to make a difference, even if it means starting at a young age. At 23, she is willing to be a trailblazer and open doors for others. She expressed her eagerness to see the next Moana and hopes that her decision will pave the way for more opportunities for Pacific Islander talent in the industry.

About the Live-Action “Moana”

The live-action adaptation of “Moana” is set to be directed by Thomas Kail, known for his work on “Hamilton.” The film is scheduled for release on June 27, 2025, and Dwayne Johnson will not only reprise his role as Maui but also serve as a co-producer alongside Dany Garcia and Hiram Garcia of Seven Bucks Productions, and Beau Flynn via Flynn Picture Co. Auli’i Cravalho, as mentioned earlier, will take on the role of an executive producer along with Scott Sheldon of Flynn Picture Co.

Following Auli’i Cravalho’s decision, there was a casting call that circulated online. Disney was looking for a 16-year-old actor to portray the new Moana. The character is described as heroic, bold, adventurous, and determined to fulfill the quest of her ancestors to save her people. This search for the next Moana represents a step towards fulfilling Auli’i’s goal of promoting representation and diversity in the entertainment industry.
