The Setup: Employee of the Month?

The story opens on Day Eight of Marc Spector’s new reality. He isn’t leaping from rooftops or discussing philosophy with Khonshu. Instead, he is Marc the Mail Boy, a timid, subservient employee at a mysterious corporation called Agence Byzantine.

We meet him in the office of Mr. Smith, the Executive Manager. Smith is a cold, corporate bully who is dressing Marc down for failing to complete his rounds. Despite “teamwork making the dream work,” Marc has failed to deliver one specific letter.

• The Undelivered Letter: The envelope is addressed to Jean-Paul Duchamp (better known to us as “Frenchie,” Marc’s oldest friend and pilot).
• The Interrogation: Mr. Smith demands to know why it wasn’t delivered. Marc, sweating and stammering, insists he doesn’t know the address. He is terrified, apologizing profusely.
• The Punishment: Smith accuses Marc of disappointing the company. He orders the letter to remain in Marc’s cart as a constant reminder of his failure until he remembers where Frenchie is. This is our first clue: the entire job is a setup to extract Frenchie’s location from Marc’s subconscious.

The Man Behind the Curtain (The Observation Deck)

As Marc leaves, the perspective shifts to a control room monitoring him. We learn that this isn’t a normal office; it’s a psychological torture chamber. The observers include agents of Agence Byzantine and a hired consultant: Mr. Fear.

• The Method: They are pumping Marc full of “Fear Chems” to keep him docile and terrified.
• The Goal: Agence Byzantine wants to find Jean-Paul Duchamp. They believe that if they break Marc Spector, he will give up his friend’s location.
• The Flaw: Mr. Fear notes that you can’t force Marc to do things through simple torture because he is “obstinate unto death.” Instead, they are exploiting his nature: Marc Spector completes the job. By giving him a job (delivering mail) and making the delivery of Frenchie’s letter the only way to “finish,” they hope his obsession with completing the mission will override his loyalty.

The Descent (Days 11-15)

We see a montage of Marc’s deterioration over the next week.

• Day 11: Marc shuffles through the hallways, delivering mail to numbered rooms (Mr. Three, Mr. Seven). He looks terrible—unshaven, sweating, and likely hallucinating.
• Day 12: He is called back to Mr. Smith’s office. The observers note that despite increasing the dosage of the fear toxins, Marc is fighting it. His resistance is higher than any normal human’s.

• Day 15: Marc is losing his grip on reality. A “colleague” (possibly a hallucination or another plant) whispers in his ear that Smith is a bully, and that “bullies only understand violence.” The programming is starting to crack; the violence inherent in Moon Knight is bubbling to the surface.

The Breach (Day 17)

By Day 17, the situation is critical. The dosage of fear chemicals required to keep Marc under control is becoming lethal (“his brains start leaking out of his ears”).

Suddenly, the control room panics. Security has been breached. One of their outer guards is found murdered. Someone else is in the building.

The Arrival of the Zodiac (The Climax)

Marc, mumbling to himself, arrives at the office of “Mr. Fifteen” to deliver mail. The room is pitch black.

• The Smell of Blood: Marc steps in something wet. A voice in the dark calls it “claret” (blood) and asks if he recognizes the smell.
• The Reveal: The lights (or lightning) reveal Zodiac, the chaotic, Moon Knight-obsessed villain (and self-proclaimed “biggest fan”). Zodiac has slaughtered the occupants of the room.

• The Interaction: Marc is confused, asking if Zodiac likes Moon Knight too. Zodiac, in his twisted way, is there to “rescue” Marc. He hands Marc a piece of “outgoing mail.”
• The Recipient: The letter is addressed to “Me” (Marc).

The Awakening

Zodiac explains his theory: The fear juice only works as long as Marc forgets who he is. He tells Marc to open the letter.

As alarms (“BRAAAP BRAAAP”) blare throughout the building, signaling the arrival of Agence Byzantine security teams, Zodiac lays it out:

“Once you realize what they took from you… that the Wild Dog will see you through.”

Marc holds the contents of the envelope (implied to be his mask or the catalyst for his memory). Zodiac gives him a simple choice: Put on the mask and kill everyone.

The Cliffhanger

The issue ends with a splash page of a “Titanic Team-Up.” The timid Mail Boy is gone. In his place stands a ready-for-violence Marc Spector alongside the murderous Zodiac, preparing to slaughter the security teams coming through the door.
