Percy Jackson fans have long speculated about the potential for a multiverse in the beloved franchise. With Hollywood currently obsessed with alternate realities and crossover possibilities, could we one day see actors from the original Percy Jackson films, like Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, and Brandon T. Jackson, appear in the new Disney+ series? Well, according to author Rick Riordan, it’s a little too soon to say — but it’s not entirely out of the question either.
Speaking to People, Riordan, the mastermind behind the Percy Jackson books and an executive producer on the Disney+ series, shared his thoughts on what the future holds for this adaptation. He emphasized that the focus is very much on the fresh faces of the new series. “It was a very conscious decision that we said, ‘Okay, we’re not going to deal with the movie stuff,’” Riordan explained. “I don’t want anything to overshadow the new young cast. This needs to be their moment.”
With that, it seems clear that while the old movie adaptations starring Lerman and company hold a place in Percy Jackson history, Riordan wants to give Walker Scobell (Percy), Leah Sava Jeffries (Annabeth), and Aryan Simhadri (Grover) the opportunity to truly shine. And they’ve done just that, with Scobell’s portrayal of Percy earning high praise from none other than Logan Lerman himself, who called his successor “really talented.”
A Percy Jackson Multiverse? Not So Fast
While the multiverse trend has become the bread and butter of superhero franchises like Marvel and DC, Riordan hinted that it’s not something the Percy Jackson universe is in any rush to embrace. He reflected on how Marvel Studios took its time before introducing the concept of the multiverse. “How many movies were they into it before they introduced that concept? So I think if that were to happen, that’s way down the line,” he noted.
In other words, while a multiverse might seem like a fun idea, don’t expect it to happen anytime soon in the Percy Jackson series. Riordan seems more interested in building the universe from the ground up, letting the characters and stories evolve organically rather than jumping on the multiverse bandwagon right away.
A Closer Look at Sea of Monsters
Looking ahead to season 2, fans can expect an exciting adaptation of The Sea of Monsters, the second book in the original Percy Jackson series. Riordan has expressed his excitement about the opportunities that TV offers to dive deeper into the backstories of beloved characters. For example, Annabeth’s stories about her past with Luke and Thalia won’t just be told in passing—they’ll be brought to life in flashbacks.
This season will introduce viewers to Thalia Grace, the daughter of Zeus, played by Tamara Smart. You may recognize her from Netflix’s Resident Evil series, where she worked alongside the late Lance Reddick, who memorably portrayed Zeus in one of his final roles. Fans also got a sneak peek of an older Percy in a D23 teaser, which confirmed that production for season 2 is already underway. While a release date has yet to be announced, the anticipation is building.
Expanding the Riordan Universe
It’s worth remembering that the Percy Jackson universe has already expanded significantly through Riordan’s other books. If you’re a fan of his work, you’ll know that The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, The Heroes of Olympus, and The Trials of Apollo all explore different mythologies and often include crossovers and references to the larger Riordan universe. It’s a shared world in the making, even if it doesn’t involve a multiverse—yet.
And while the idea of a multiverse isn’t on the table at the moment, it’s fun to imagine the possibilities. After all, Disney+ did share a picture earlier this year of Walker Scobell meeting Logan Lerman at a Hulu on Disney+ event, fueling fans’ imaginations. Could we eventually see some form of crossover between the new and old Percy Jackson worlds? Only time will tell.
For now, Percy Jackson fans can enjoy season 1 of Percy Jackson and the Olympians, currently streaming on Disney+, and look forward to what promises to be an epic second season. One thing’s for sure: Rick Riordan’s universe isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
