Childhood is the stage where most development of an individual takes place. Ensuring mental wellness along with physical and cognitive wellness is truly essential. These are a few methods one can follow to nurture a child’s mental health:

Open Communication

Communication is an integral part of developing a good personality. Knowing that there is someone to listen to you and offer you insight on a certain topic can help the child gain reassurance in their thoughts and decisions. This would entail not just talking to the child, but also listening to what they have to say and trying to understand it.

Open communication will also help them develop their own opinions and ideas, and give them the tools needed to carve out a personality. Maintaining open communication with a child will help nurture not just their personality but also their mental health.

Lead By Example

Children learn more from modelling behaviour than being outright taught. For a child to adopt certain behaviour and mental habits, it can be achieved easily by leading by example. You can keep a positive, optimistic approach towards challenges when faced with one, and a child will incorporate similar behaviour when they are in trouble.

Learning new skills is also possible through modelling behaviour. Skills are quite important in the development of the child’s cognition and give them the tools required for going through life. You can imbue the child with specific skills needed to maintain a healthy mental state of mind by adopting them yourself.

Be Present

Children need to be assured repeatedly to gain the safety needed in order to achieve better mental health. Simply being present in a child’s life gives them a chance to know that there is a safety net for them to fall on, so instead of being afraid, they would take risks and find better ways to develop, mentally.

Childhood is a precarious time, it is integral for children to understand that there is someone who finds what they say to be important. Hence, you must be present and committed to the activities you choose to do with a child, which could help keep negative thoughts away.

Take Accountability

Making mistakes is a part of life, and this is an important lesson that should be imbued in every child’s mind, from a very young age. Making mistakes is not the worst thing you could do, mistakes are fixable. Though not accepting your mistakes and taking accountability for them, is not going to help the child find a conducive environment for growth.

If you want to raise a child with good ideals, you have to accept your faults and mistakes and work towards fixing them. This will prove helpful in creating an environment that will help children accept their own faults and give them an opportunity to grow.

Set Boundaries

Boundaries are crucial to any relationship. There are certain things about themselves that people do not want to give you access to, and that is understandable. In adults, almost everyone has boundaries which are respected by other people most of the time.

You should encourage a child to set their own personal boundaries. This will help them understand what kind of behaviour they do or do not like and also allows them to build their own parameters of need and safety. Just encouraging the child to set boundaries, however, is not enough. It is also critical to be mindful of these boundaries and respect them. This can prove helpful in the child developing their mental health.

Reach Out To Them

There will be times when a child might not be comfortable bringing up something that is bothering them or just may not be feeling up to talking. When this happens, you should reach out to them. It can be a way to discover what is wrong with them and encourage them to come forward with their own thoughts about certain situations.

Reaching out to them is very reassuring as they understand that there is someone who would be interested in listening to their trivial problems, which may not be trivial to them at all. This could help them come out of their shells and nurture a better, more open personality and be helpful in nurturing a healthy mental state.

Be Honest

Honesty is such an essential value to inspire in your children. And as we found out before, children learn better from modelling behaviour rather than being told to act a certain way. Due to this, the best way to inspire honesty within children is by practising it yourself in your everyday life.

Being honest about certain things will let the child develop a realistic view of the world and set their expectations accordingly. Managing expectations is a major part of nurturing mental health, and neither of those can be possible without honesty.

Play With Them

Childhood is a time of growth. Playing amongst other things plays a huge part in the growth of a child. You can invest some time into playing with the child and understand their games and the logic behind them. This will not only help you understand the logic behind their thinking and give you the tools necessary for the growth of a child’s mental health but also allow you to spend some quality time with the child, which can also prove to be incredibly helpful in terms of better mental health.

Praise Them

Praise is such a huge part of developing good mental health. Your behaviour and your actions play a huge role in ensuring you develop well, overall. Receiving praise for certain behaviour ensures the likelihood of the behaviour being repeated by the child.

Hence, showing praise for the good habits and behaviour a child shows is a good way to ensure that they will develop similar behaviour over time. This can prove beneficial in the quest for nurturing better mental health.

These are a few things, from the many others, that you can undertake in order to ensure that you are helping the child nurture better and sound mental health. You do need to remember, however, that every child differs in many, many ways and what may work for one may not work for the other. It is important to understand the child’s needs first and provide what they need accordingly.
