The magic is officially returning to the screen, as HBO has finally announced the young actors who will portray the iconic trio of Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, and Ron Weasley in its upcoming television adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s beloved book series.
Meet the New Golden Trio
After an extensive global casting search that saw over 30,000 young hopefuls audition, Dominic McLaughlin has been cast as Harry Potter, Arabella Stanton as Hermione Granger, and Alastair Stout as Ron Weasley. The casting process, which began with an open call last fall, was led by renowned casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann.
Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and executive producer/director Mark Mylod expressed their excitement in a joint statement, saying:
“The talent of these three unique actors is wonderful to behold, and we cannot wait for the world to witness their magic together onscreen.”
All three actors are relative newcomers. McLaughlin, a Scottish actor, will appear in the upcoming Sky comedy Grow alongside Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel, as well as the BBC’s action-adventure series Gifted. Stanton recently starred as Matilda in Matilda: The Musical on London’s West End from 2023–2024. Stout, meanwhile, will be making his major acting debut as Ron Weasley.
A Faithful Retelling with Room to Breathe
The HBO series promises to be a faithful adaptation of Rowling’s original seven-book saga, offering more room to explore the intricate details and subplots that the films didn’t have time to fully develop. The show is expected to span at least a decade, with each season focusing on one book in the series.
Filming is scheduled to begin in summer 2025 at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden in the UK. The first season is anticipated to premiere in 2026 on HBO Max.
Veteran Talent Joins the Cast
The young trio will share the screen with an impressive lineup of established actors taking on some of Hogwarts’ most iconic roles. John Lithgow will portray Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer playing Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu taking on the role of Severus Snape.
Other confirmed cast members include:
- Nick Frost as Rubeus Hagrid
- Luke Thallon as Professor Quirinus Quirrell
- Paul Whitehouse as Argus Filch
More casting announcements are expected in the coming months as production ramps up.

Behind the Scenes: Creative Team and Production
Francesca Gardiner, known for her work on His Dark Materials and Succession, is writing and executive producing the series, as well as serving as showrunner. Mark Mylod, also from Succession and Game of Thrones, will direct multiple episodes and act as an executive producer.
The series is being produced by HBO in collaboration with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television. Executive producers include J.K. Rowling, Neil Blair, Ruth Kenley-Letts, and Harry Potter film producer David Heyman.
Rowling’s Controversial Presence
Despite ongoing controversy surrounding J.K. Rowling’s public views on transgender issues, HBO has stood by her involvement in the series. HBO Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys addressed the matter on The Town podcast, stating:
“She’s entitled to her personal, political views. ‘Harry Potter’ is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.”
Rowling already collaborates with HBO and the BBC on the detective drama C.B. Strike, and her role as executive producer here continues that partnership.
