The Hunger Games universe just got more dazzling. Lionsgate’s upcoming prequel film, Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, continues to build an impressive ensemble, with acting legends Glenn Close and Billy Porter officially stepping into major roles.

Glenn Close as the Formidable Drusilla Sickle

Eight-time Academy Award nominee Glenn Close has been cast as Drusilla Sickle, the fierce and chilling escort assigned to District 12’s Tributes. Known for her commanding performances in Fatal Attraction, Dangerous Liaisons, and The Wife, Close is expected to bring gravitas and intimidation to the role of Drusilla. The character is described as cruel and cold—a perfect match for Close’s ability to embody intense, morally complex personas.

Producer Nina Jacobson shared her enthusiasm about Close’s casting, saying, “Glenn Close is a dream Drusilla. She brings so much of her intellect and imagination to each role, creating characters who are unforgettable and iconic.”

Billy Porter Steps In as Magno Stift

Joining Close is Emmy-winning, Tony and Grammy recipient Billy Porter, who will portray Magno Stift—Drusilla’s estranged husband and the stylist for the District 12 Tributes. Unlike Cinna’s inspired designs in the original saga, Magno is described as an uninspired and somewhat detached designer, making for a unique contrast in the franchise’s fashion-forward legacy.

Porter, renowned for his powerhouse performances in Pose, Kinky Boots, and most recently in Cabaret on the West End, brings his flair for drama and elegance to the Hunger Games world. Jacobson said, “Billy is one of those rare performers who can dazzle and devastate in equal measure on stage and screen. He made an indelible impression on me when we worked together on Pose, both as an actor and a human being.”

The Film: A Return to Panem’s Dark Past

Sunrise on the Reaping is set nearly 24 years before Katniss Everdeen’s revolution in the original Hunger Games series. The film takes place during the 50th Hunger Games—also known as the Second Quarter Quell—where a young Haymitch Abernathy volunteers as tribute and enters the deadly arena that will forever shape his future. Fans may remember Haymitch as the grizzled, sharp-witted mentor to Katniss and Peeta in the original saga.

This installment draws from Suzanne Collins’ newest novel of the same name, published in March 2025. Within its first week, Sunrise on the Reaping sold 1.5 million copies across English-speaking countries, including 1.2 million in the U.S. alone. These figures nearly doubled the first-week sales of The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and tripled those of Mockingjay, demonstrating immense fan interest in Panem’s earlier days.

Franchise Legacy and Box Office Expectations

The Hunger Games franchise continues to be a cinematic powerhouse. The previous five films have amassed over $3.3 billion globally, and with Sunrise on the Reaping, Lionsgate aims to further expand its dystopian universe. By blending returning creative forces with bold new talent, the prequel is shaping up to be one of the most anticipated releases in the franchise’s history.
