The Dark Avengers is a team of marvel Comics characters, who are a villainous version of the Avengers. The team was created by writer Brian Michael Bendis and artist Mike Deodato Jr. in 2009. The team was formed by Norman Osborn, also known as the Green Goblin, who took advantage of the public’s mistrust of superheroes following the events of the “Secret Invasion” storyline. Osborn, who had been appointed as the head of the government agency S.H.I.E.L.D, created the Dark Avengers as a way to maintain control over the country and fight against the real Avengers. The team consisted of characters who were either impersonating well-known Avengers or were villains using stolen versions of their equipment. Some of the notable members of the team include Venom as Spider-Man, Bullseye as Hawkeye, and Daken as Wolverine. The team’s actions were often violent and extreme, and they were eventually exposed as frauds and disbanded. The Dark Avengers have since appeared in various Marvel comics and storylines, and their legacy continues to be a significant part of the Marvel universe.

History of the Dark Avengers

The Dark Avengers started when the government turned to Norman Osborn, a reformed supervillain now going by the name Iron Patriot, to lead a new version of the Avengers team. Osborn, who had previously been in charge of the Thunderbolts and had become a public hero for his role in repelling the Skrull threat, is also appointed as the head of the espionage agency S.H.I.E.L.D., which he rebrands as H.A.M.M.E.R. He assembles a new team of Avengers, which includes former Thunderbolts members and new recruits, such as Sentry, Ares, and Noh-Varr (now Captain marvel), as well as disguised super-villains like Moonstone, Venom, Bullseye, and Daken, who takes on the Wolverine mantle.

Osborn also took on the identity of Iron Patriot, using an Iron Man suit with red, white, and blue colors. The team goes on various missions, such as rescuing Doctor Doom from Morgan Le Fay and setting up martial law in San Francisco to quell anti-mutant riots. However, their actions are often violent and extreme, and Osborn’s past as a murderer and a liar is constantly haunting the team, causing it to be eventually exposed as fraud and disbanded.

A new version of the Dark Avengers was also formed by Norman Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R. The roster includes members such as Skaar, Gorgon, Ai Apaec, Dr. June Covington, Superia, and Trickshot. The team is supported by HYDRA and A.I.M, and Norman Osborn also has A.I.M rebuild Ragnarok to join the team. The team faces off against the New Avengers, and although the fight is evenly matched, the Dark Avengers’ actions ultimately damage the New Avengers’ reputation and lead to their capture. The team is later considered for the Thunderbolts program, and the series is even renamed Dark Avengers with the same creative team. The team is later thrown into an alternate reality, but eventually return to their own world, where they struggle with the fact that most of them are still criminals.

Strongest Members of the Dark Avengers

The team of the Dark Avengers have many strong and powerful members who can give any superhero a run for their money.

THE SENTRY

Sentry is the most powerful and unstable member of the Dark Avengers. He is a forgotten golden age hero who was supposedly revived for Norman’s team, but his dark persona, The Void, constantly battles with him internally. Sentry’s mental instability makes him the most dangerous member of the team, and despite his loyalty to Norman, it ultimately leads to the destruction of the first Dark Avengers. During the Siege of Asgard, the Sentry loses control and starts to fight members of any Avengers team. Despite his immense potential, the Sentry was ultimately a naïve and manipulated member of the team before everything fell apart.

IRON PATRIOT

Norman Osborn, formerly known as the Green Goblin, led the Dark Avengers both as the Iron Patriot and as the head of H.A.M.M.E.R. He used an old Stark suit of armor to give him enhanced abilities and led the team to both victory and defeat. Though he was seen as a trusted and powerful figure at the time, he secretly ran the team as a criminal organization, using it to seek revenge on the heroes who had defeated him in the past. His immense wealth and position in the country made him a formidable threat, but ultimately his own madness proved to be his downfall.

RAGNAROK

Ragnarok, a cyborg clone of Thor, has a history of violence and destruction. He is most famously known for killing Bill Foster during the Civil War storyline. He has been destroyed and rebuilt multiple times, with Norman Osborn having him recreated for the second Dark Avengers team. Despite his past, Ragnarok is a fiercely loyal member, due to being programmed as such. He also possesses some of Thor’s powers, making him a powerful asset for the team. Eventually, he joins some of the Dark Avengers in becoming a member of the new Thunderbolts team.
