Developer Phoenix Labs has announced that its free-to-play, monster-slaying game Dauntless will shut down on May 29, 2025, at 11:45 PM PST (2:45 AM Eastern on May 30). The company confirmed that no further updates or content will be released, marking the end of Dauntless’ journey amid a period of significant internal changes.

A Journey from Acclaim to Controversy

Dauntless initially captured gamers’ imaginations when it entered PC early access in May 2018 and later expanded to a full release in September 2019 on PC and consoles. The game’s fast-paced, cooperative gameplay drew comparisons to the Monster Hunter series and even led to releases on Nintendo Switch, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. However, the launch of the controversial Awakening update in late 2024 sparked widespread discontent. Players flooded Steam with negative reviews, and plans to address the update’s issues were scrapped, contributing to the decision to end the service.

Corporate Restructuring and Major Layoffs

The shutdown announcement comes on the heels of significant operational shifts at Phoenix Labs. After its acquisition by blockchain-focused Forte in 2023, the studio canceled all projects except for Dauntless and its second title, Fae Farm. Earlier restructuring efforts saw the layoff of around 140 employees, and a subsequent round of cuts—affecting the majority of the remaining staff—was implemented due to “unfortunate but necessary changes” in operations. These dramatic staffing reductions reflect the company’s broader strategy to reallocate resources amid mounting challenges.

Final Countdown and Shutdown Details

With the decision made to cease further development, Dauntless will no longer receive updates or content. Although Phoenix Labs had considered an update to address player concerns following the Awakening update, those plans have been abandoned. Players now have just three months to experience all current content before the game’s servers go offline and Dauntless is removed from digital storefronts. Notably, the shutdown comes just three months shy of the game’s sixth anniversary.

Looking Ahead: The Fate of Fae Farm

While Dauntless faces its final days, Phoenix Labs’ second title, Fae Farm, remains available. The fantasy farm simulator, which requires a purchase to play, recently received the Skies of Azoria expansion in June 2024—introducing a new sky-based area for exploration. The company has not yet announced any changes regarding Fae Farm, leaving its future uncertain as Phoenix Labs continues its corporate restructuring.
