A new chapter in the Batman legacy is about to unfold—and this time, it’s steeped in the rich history and mythology of 16th-century Mesoamerica. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has officially announced the home release of Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires, the bold animated Elseworlds movie directed by Juan José Meza-León. The film will debut digitally on September 19, followed by 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray releases on September 23, 2024.

A Reimagined Caped Crusader in Aztec Times

Set during the height of the Aztec Empire, this animated adventure presents a fresh take on the Dark Knight. In this version, the mantle of Batman is assumed by Yohualli Coatl, a young Aztec boy whose life changes forever after the brutal murder of his father by Spanish conquistadors, led by the infamous Hernán Cortés.

With his village destroyed and danger looming, Yohualli escapes to Tenochtitlán, seeking aid from King Moctezuma and the high priest Yoka. There, he begins a spiritual and physical transformation inside the temple of the bat god Tzinacán, training under a wise mentor who equips him with the tools, skills, and costume needed to fight back. Through tragedy and training, Yohualli is reborn—not just as a warrior, but as Batman, protector of his people and avenger of his father.

Familiar Characters, Aztec Makeover

True to Elseworlds fashion, the film brings a unique twist to beloved DC characters, grounding them in Aztec mythology.

  • Jaguar Woman steps into the role of a fierce and stealthy ally, reminiscent of Catwoman, yet deeply connected to native traditions.
  • Forest Ivy, a mystical reimagining of Poison Ivy, appears as a nature deity offering wisdom and guidance.
  • Cortés doesn’t just serve as a historical villain—he evolves into an Aztec-flavored version of Two-Face, flipping a golden coin and waging a personal vendetta against Batman and Jaguar Woman.
  • The most chilling addition is a Joker-like figure—a bloodthirsty madman who carves a smile into his face and worms his way into Cortés’s inner circle. This horrifying take on the Clown Prince of Crime is voiced by Raymond Cruz (Breaking Bad, Better Call Saul).

Voice Cast: A Blend of Talents from Both Cultures

The English-language version features Jay Hernández (Suicide Squad, Magnum P.I.) as Aztec Batman, and Raymond Cruz in the Joker-inspired role. Meanwhile, the Spanish-language version showcases renowned Mexican actors including Horacio García Rojas, Omar Chaparro, and Álvaro Morte.

This bilingual production bridges the global Batman fandom with deep respect for Mesoamerican culture and language.

Behind the Scenes: Creative Team and Vision

Aztec Batman: Clash of Empires is directed by Juan Meza-León, known for his work on Rick and Morty and Harley Quinn. The screenplay comes from Ernie Altbacker, the mind behind Justice League Dark: Apokolips War. Together, they deliver a visually rich and emotionally charged story that marries DC Comics mythology with historical authenticity.

The film is produced by Warner Bros. Animation in collaboration with Ánima and Chatrone, based on characters created by Bob Kane and Bill Finger. Key producers include José C. García de Letona, Fernando de Fuentes, Carina Schulze, Aaron D. Berger, Jim Krieg, and Kimberly S. Moreau. Executive producers include Sam Register, Tomás Yankelevich, and Michael Uslan.
