When it comes to comics we always talk about the main protagonist or the superhero. These characters are the poster boys and the center of attraction of any comic book. But a superhero won’t even be a hero if there is no villain. A villain only makes a random powerful character into a celebrated superhero. The heroism of a superhero is directly proportional to the might of a villain. There are a few villainous evil characters who get their well deserved praise and fans attention. However, when it comes to female villains we often tend to overlook them as sidekicks or second fiddle. But there are many strong female villains with a lot of potential. So, here are the top 10 female villains in comics.

The first on the list is one of the strongest female characters of marvel Comics and the lady love of Thanos ‘Lady Death’. The immortal character was created by Mike Friedrich and Jim Starlin. Lady Death debuted in the 1973 comic book ‘Captain Marvel’ #26. Lady Death has also been involved in a love triangle with Thanos and Deadpool. Where Thanos even went on to destroy and conquer the universe to impress his lady love. However, Lady Death is an immortal abstract cosmic object which has no physical body but at times appears as a human female.

Ivy is one of the oldest and most popular female villains in Comics. Poison Ivy first appeared in the ‘Batman’ comic book #181 which was published in 1966. The villainous character was created by writer Robert Kanigher and comics artist Carmine Infantino. The character is also known for her association and romantic storyline with DC’s most popular female anti-hero ‘Harley Quinn’. Poison Ivy is a misanthropic botanist and biochemist by profession. She possesses powers like poisonous touch, supernatural control over plant life. The DC character mostly uses her powers for ecoterrorism.

With time Harley Quinn has established herself as one of the most popular anti-hero characters of DC. But that can’t change the fact that Harley has served long as a deadly evil villain. From being Joker’s sidekick to becoming a main villain herself and then even transforming into a Supervillian. The character has had her own dark and evil journey. However, with time Harley Quinn’s character has evolved but you never know what’s coming your way. As Quinn’s character is a layered and complicated character who is bound to break barriers & boundaries.

Next in our list of top female villains is Enchantress. The DC supervillain character was created by the duo of Bob Haney and Howard Purcell. Enchantress marked her first appearance in comic book Strange Adventures #187 which was published in 1966. June Moone is the alter ego of the DC supervillain ‘Enchantress’. Moone possesses mysterious powers, the supervillain also has great knowledge about occult and Black Magic.

The 5th name on the list is Lady Deathstrike (Yuriko Oyama) who’s the daughter of the scientist Kenji Oyama. The lady is so brutal that she even killed her own father. After killing Kenji Oyama shifted her focus to Wolverine. The mutant (Wolverine) was one of Yuriko Oyama’s father’s creations. Which led to several clashes and events. The Marvel villain (Lady Deathstrike) also has a technologically enhanced self-repairing body which makes her more deadly and dangerous in nature.

The Apokolips origin DC super villain is known for cruelty and brutality. The old lady is a great leader and an expert tactician. Granny Goodness is a skilled warrior and also possesses immortality.

Cheetah is one of the oldest female villains who made her debut in the first volume of Wonder Woman (Comics) which was published in 1943. The DC villain was created by William Moulton Marston. Cheetah’s alter ego is Sebastian Ballesteros (most recent one) who has an appearance of a Cheetah (animal) and has superhuman powers.

That’s the reason she is often referred to as the ‘God killer’.

Killer Frost even battled the elite team of Justice League with ease in her villainous tenure.

Hela’s character was created by the iconic duo of writer Stan Lee and illustrator Jack Kirby. In the comics storyline Hela is depicted as the daughter of Loki and she was born in the land of Giants. And later she was crowned as the ‘Goddess of Death’ by the Asgardian King Odin. The Death Queen possesses powers like telepathy, immortality and Black magic.
