If you thought the fall of the Kree/Skrull Alliance was the end of Billy and Teddy’s troubles, think again. The new series Wiccan: Witches Road by Wyatt Kennedy and Andy Pereira kicks off with a heartbreaking, mysterious, and magical debut. We find our favorite Young Avengers royal couple stripped of their empire, stranded in a hostile land, and facing a legend of folklore. Let’s walk through the story page-by-page to see exactly what is happening to the former Court Wizard and Emperor.
The Prologue: A Tale of Two Souls
The issue opens with a recap of the “Once upon a time” we know so well. We are reminded of the Scarlet Witch’s chaotic creation of her twins, Billy and Tommy, and how Billy (Wiccan) eventually found his soulmate in Teddy (Hulkling). They rose to the highest heights—becoming Emperor and Court Wizard of the Kree/Skrull Alliance—but the prologue ends on a grim note: “But now the alliance has fallen…”.
The narration shifts to a fairy-tale style, recounting Billy’s origin—some say he was made of demon fragments, others say he was willed into life by love. It paints a picture of their glorious past defending their kingdom, only to tease that the story’s ending depends entirely on “who is writing the story”.
The Crash
We cut abruptly to the harsh present. Billy and Teddy have crash-landed. The scene is chaotic and bloody. Teddy is badly injured, bleeding out amidst the wreckage of their ship. Billy is frantic, trying to use his magic to transport them home, but he’s hit with a terrifying realization: “Home’s gone, baby.”.
Their empire is gone, and Billy’s magic is “numb,” like a car with a busted ignition. He can’t fix Teddy, and he can’t get them out. It’s a raw, emotional start that strips them of their resources and status immediately.
Survival Mode
The couple is stranded in what Billy guesses is Eastern Europe. Despite the dire circumstances, their chemistry shines through. Billy constructs a rescue sled for Teddy—a skill he reveals he learned from Kate Bishop (Hawkeye) during their “no-powers” camping trips.
There is a touching flashback/dialogue moment where Billy recounts how Kate taught him survival skills because she insisted it was a “learning opportunity” rather than just letting him teleport her to a hospital when she broke her ankle. It’s a sweet moment of levity (“I miss Kate”) before reality sets in again.
Billy decides he needs to scout the area. Teddy, ever the protector even when he can’t walk, tries to stop him, but Billy insists, armed with Teddy’s sword.
The Village and The Leshy
Billy stumbles upon a local village girl named Katerina. But their introduction is interrupted by a monster—a Leshy (forest spirit). Billy tries to fight it, noting it’s “fast, feral,” but his magic is still glitching. Just as the creature attacks, Teddy (who evidently dragged himself after his husband) intervenes.
After surviving the skirmish, it is revealed that Katerina is actually a doctor. She helps stabilize Teddy, though she notes she’s never worked on an alien physiology before.

The Quest Revealed
Katerina provides the critical lore for the arc. She explains that the Leshy were once peaceful healers until Roxxon built a nearby facility. Since then, a mysterious Witch has taken residence in the woods, turning the spirits violent.
Katerina gives them a quest: Go west to the old chapel and follow the moon to find the Witch. She warns them of a fox that will try to seduce them. Billy, realizing his magic is broken and Teddy needs better care than a village doctor can provide, decides they have no choice but to find this Witch and see if she has a spellbook or relic he can “borrow”.
Into the Witch’s House
Billy and Teddy find the Witch’s house. It’s not the “gingerbread” house Billy expected, but a strange structure that seems to breathe. A fox appears (just as warned) and the house lets it in.
Inside, the atmosphere turns trippy, described by Billy as “Alice in Wonderland” weird. They overhear voices—a mother scolding a child (or creature) about keeping “it” indoors because it bites.
The Twist: Baba Yaga
The climax of the issue is the confrontation. The Witch knows exactly who they are. She taunts Billy, telling him that the elemental magic in his veins has abandoned him because he abandoned his home.
She drops a heavy truth bomb: “I was once a tamer of the elementals, like yourself.”. She scolds him for ignoring his responsibilities to “chase the cosmos down the Witches’ Road”.
The issue ends with a terrifying transformation and reveal. The Witch is not just any magic user; she declares:
“I AM BABA YAGA! I AM THE MOTHER OF ALL WITCHES!”.
