Marvel fans eagerly anticipating the next installment of Disney+’s hit animated anthology series “What If…?” received an exciting update from Marvel Studios Head of TV and Streaming, Brad Winderbaum. Speaking with ComicBook.com, Winderbaum shared insights on what to expect from the highly-anticipated Season 3 and hinted at the culmination of The Watcher’s storyline. Here’s what we know about the upcoming season and its significance in Marvel’s animated universe.
Insights from Marvel Exec Brad Winderbaum
Brad Winderbaum, executive producer of “What If…?”, revealed that Season 3 will likely be the next project from Marvel Animation to receive a release date, following the successful finale of “X-Men ’97” Season 1. He confirmed that production on the new season is nearing completion and emphasized its role as the culmination of The Watcher’s story arc, which began in Season 1.
“In terms of animation, What If…? Season 3 is probably the one that comes out next,” Winderbaum stated. “It is the culmination of a trilogy. We’re actually close to completing that one, and it really feels like you’ve gone through this amazing emotional experience with Uatu.”
Winderbaum teased that The Watcher’s storyline in Season 3 will highlight his compassion towards humanity. “What’s great about The Watcher is that he presents himself as uncaring and cold, just an observer, but he cares more than everybody and anybody. That is on full display in that third season.”
Oscar nominee Jeffrey Wright has been voicing Uatu/The Watcher since the first installment, and the cosmic being recently made a surprise cameo in “X-Men ‘97” Season 1, where his silhouette was briefly seen in the night skies of Genosha.
Season 3 of ‘What If…?’ Will Conclude the Anthology Series
In addition to teasing the upcoming release, Winderbaum confirmed that Season 3 will be the final installment of “What If…?”. This announcement marks a significant moment for Marvel’s animated series, as “What If…?” is one of only two Marvel Disney+ shows to air a second season, the other being “Loki”.
Winderbaum referred to Season 3 as the “culmination of a trilogy,” signaling Marvel Studios’ readiness to close this chapter of storytelling and move forward with other animated projects. “X-Men ’97” has already been renewed for Season 2 and has received high praise from both critics and fans, achieving a near-flawless 99% score from reviewers and a 94% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes.
