Books offer exciting avenues for visual adaptations. Firstly, they offer a cohesive plot, great characters and a well-crafted setting and theme on a platter. Secondly, they bring with themselves their own fan following when being adapted. And lastly, they allow filmmakers to use their creative instincts to enhance and elevate a store to the next level. Web Series of 2021 Based On Novels | TV Series | Adaptations | Books:
Shadow and Bone
Leigh Bardugo’s hugely popular YA series was recently adapted by Netflix into a TV show, and the audience seems to be loving it just as much! The series is set in a fictional world called Ravka, torn apart into two factions by the Shadow Fold. This is an area of utter darkness where dangerous cannibalistic creatures lurk. Alina Starkov is our protagonist, and she accidentally unleashes a great power and saves the life of her best friend when he is in danger.
Firefly Lane
This series by Kristin Hannah captures decades of beautiful friendship between two unlikely girls – one nerdy and the other uber cool. As the duo’s friendship unfolds, so does the portrait of their intimate lives – their childhood, lovers, family and more.
The Wheel of Time
This TV series is based on Robert Jordan’s high fantasy books. It draws heavily from Hindu and Buddhist mythological concepts of cyclical time to create a world that is simultaneously in the distant past and distant future. The highly complex plot is difficult to put down in a few lines. Suffice it to say that it follows our protagonists as they deal with the Dragon Reborn. The series was hailed as one of the greatest since Lord of the Rings and the series is definitely one to keep on your radar.
The Underground Railroad
This is an adaptation of Pulitzer winner Colson Whitehead’s novel of the same name about racism and slavery. The book is a historical fiction, spanning the life of a cotton plantation slave who tries to escape her life of conflict and ends up in hot waters. This is a daring book, with a film adaptation as memorable as the book itself.
The Lost Symbol
This series (The Lost Symbol) is based on the novel written by “Dan Brown”. This series seems more like a treasure hunt series where our protagonist is supposed to find out the clues and reach the hidden artifact or treasure. The Lost Symbol is released on peacock streaming website.
Daisy Jones and the Six
Taylor Jenkin Reid’s novel made a buzz when it came out, instantly becoming a bestseller across the world. People still haven’t stopped raving about it – and for good reason. This historical fiction follows a rock band that shoots to popularity in the 1970s, and ultimately meets an untimely demise. This book is part mystery and part contemporary fiction – and of course a visual treat.
