ESA juice mission is launched to look for life on Jupiter’s moons
On Friday, 14 April, at 8:14 a.m. ET, the European Space Agency (ESA) successfully launched the Jupiter Icy Moons Explorer mission (Juice) using an Ariane 5 rocket from Europe’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana. Juice has a remarkable objective: to thoroughly explore Jupiter and three of its largest moons. Shortly after separation from the Ariane 5 rocket, Juice established communication with Earth-based mission control, as confirmed by a signal received about an hour after launch.
Ganymede, Callisto, and Europa, three of Jupiter’s largest moons, have captivated scientists due to the belief that they harbor subsurface oceans capable of supporting life. In 2024, NASA will launch the Europa Clipper mission, which is expected to arrive at Jupiter in April 2030 and conduct a series of approximately 50 flybys of Europa, including some as close as 16 miles (25 kilometers) from its surface.
