Warner Bros. has announced an exciting addition to the Lord of the Rings universe with the upcoming film titled “The Hunt for Gollum.” Slated for release in 2026, this new movie will be directed by Andy Serkis, who famously portrayed Gollum in the original films. Serkis will also star in the film, embodying the titular character once again. The project sees the return of Peter Jackson, along with Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, who will be involved in production and oversight, ensuring the movie maintains the authentic Middle-earth vibe.

What We Know About the Film

“The Hunt for Gollum” is set to explore new storylines, delving into untold adventures of Gollum. The film is currently in the scriptwriting phase, indicating that while full plot details are not yet finalized, the focus will likely revolve around Gollum’s life and events that have not been depicted in the previous movies. This project is part of a broader initiative by Warner Bros. to expand on J.R.R. Tolkien’s Stories, which also includes other films and a continuation of the Prime Video’s “Rings of Power” TV series.

Background on Gollum

Gollum, originally known as Sméagol, is one of the most complex characters in Tolkien’s legendarium. He was introduced in “The Hobbit” as a creature corrupted by the One Ring, which he referred to as his “Precious.” Gollum’s story is tragic, starting as a Stoor Hobbit who comes into possession of the Ring by chance, which eventually leads to his moral and physical decay. His life is significantly shaped by the Ring’s influence, driving him into a split personality between Sméagol, his former Hobbit self, and Gollum, the darker side that the Ring brings out.

Gollum in Previous Adaptations

Gollum made significant appearances in both “The Hobbit” and “The Lord of the Rings,” portrayed as a pivotal character in the narrative. In “The Hobbit,” he loses the Ring to Bilbo Baggins, which sets off the events in the later Books. Gollum’s portrayal by Andy Serkis in Peter Jackson’s film adaptations was groundbreaking, especially with the use of motion capture technology, which brought a new level of depth to CGI characters in cinema. His portrayal earned acclaim for capturing the dual nature of Gollum’s character, showcasing his cunning and tragic nature.
