Nintendo and Universal have officially unveiled the first trailer for The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a Nintendo Direct livestream, giving fans a thrilling look at Mario’s next big-screen adventure. Serving as a direct sequel to 2023’s billion-dollar hit The Super Mario Bros. Movie, the new film continues the story where the last one left off — but this time, it ventures far beyond the Mushroom Kingdom and into the stars.
Releasing worldwide on April 3, 2026, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie reunites the core voice cast including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, and Keegan-Michael Key as Toad. Behind the camera, directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return, along with screenwriter Matthew Fogel, who penned the first film.
A Story That Reaches for the Stars
The trailer opens on a humorous note with Mario and Luigi teasing a pint-sized Bowser — still shrunken after eating a Mini Mushroom in the previous movie and now trapped inside a miniature castle. Despite his reduced size, Bowser keeps busy painting romantic portraits of himself and Princess Peach, one of which triggers a comic rejection from Mario. However, Bowser’s peaceful imprisonment doesn’t last long.
Soon, the night sky fills with shooting stars, signaling the start of a new cosmic adventure. Mario, Peach, Luigi, and Toad embark on a star-bound journey inspired by the 2007 Wii classic Super Mario Galaxy. Their travels take them across extraordinary planets — from an ocean world surrounded by coral reefs to the inverted pyramids of a desert planet reminiscent of Super Mario Odyssey’s Sand Kingdom.
New Faces: Rosalina and Bowser Jr.

Two major new characters join the expanded Mario cinematic universe. Brie Larson lends her voice to Rosalina, the celestial guardian and mother of the Lumas, who plays a critical role in helping Mario through his galactic quest. In the trailer, she’s seen heroically battling Megaleg, a towering spider-like robot inspired by the same foe from the original Super Mario Galaxy game. The sequence appears to take place at her home, the Star Observatory.
Meanwhile, Benny Safdie voices Bowser Jr., who takes on the mantle of the primary antagonist while his father remains miniaturized. Equipped with a magical paintbrush—first introduced in Super Mario Sunshine—Bowser Jr. uses it to transform his armor and create new forms of attack. One of his most striking appearances sees him in purple battle armor, echoing his design from Super Mario Bros. Wonder. His goal appears clear: to free his father and restore Bowser’s strength.
Familiar Worlds and Hidden Details
The trailer is packed with Easter eggs and nods to classic Nintendo worlds. Eagle-eyed viewers spotted Peach and Toad flying over a planet resembling Galaxy’s Beach Bowl Galaxy, complete with palm trees and Bloopers swimming among the coral. In another shot, Peach faces enemies amid a massive roulette wheel, possibly referencing Bowser’s Casino from Super Mario 3D World or King Boo’s Casino from Super Mario Sunshine.
Mario and Luigi, on the other hand, are seen racing motorcycles through the desert city of Tostarena, bringing back the sombrero-wearing charm of Super Mario Odyssey. There’s also a brief rooftop moment at Peach’s Castle, where Mario and Peach watch the Star Festival — a classic scene lovingly adapted from the Wii original.
Although Yoshi doesn’t appear in the trailer, hints of his inclusion have surfaced through merchandise leaks. Fans expect the beloved dinosaur to make his debut, tying back to the post-credits tease from the previous film.
Aiming for Another Blockbuster

Following the massive success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1.3 billion globally and became the fifth highest-grossing animated film of all time, Nintendo and Illumination are clearly aiming to replicate that achievement. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie promises the same humor, nostalgia, and visual spectacle that made its predecessor a worldwide sensation — now amplified with an interstellar twist.
Packed with fan-favorite characters, deep-cut game references, and a story that spans the universe, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie looks poised to deliver an adventure worthy of its name.
The film soars into theaters on April 3, 2026.
