A long-awaited The Simpsons Movie sequel has finally been announced, nearly two decades after the iconic animated family first made their big-screen debut. Disney’s 20th Century Studios announced that the film will arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027, taking the release slot of a previously planned but now-canceled Marvel project.

Return of Springfield to the Big Screen

The news was revealed with a teaser poster shared on Instagram, featuring a pink donut—the show’s most recognizable symbol—being grabbed, alongside the tagline: “Homer’s coming back for seconds.” No official plot details have been released yet, but excitement is building among fans who have been waiting since 2007, when The Simpsons Movie grossed over $536 million worldwide against a $75 million budget. The original film, directed by David Silverman, centered on Homer accidentally polluting Springfield’s lake, which led the Environmental Protection Agency to trap the town under a giant glass dome. The story ended with baby Maggie teasing “sequel?” during the end credits in 2007—a hint that fans have been anticipating ever since.

A Franchise with Historic Longevity

Created by Matt Groening in 1989, The Simpsons has become the longest-running animated and scripted primetime series in U.S. television history, surpassing 800 episodes and still going strong. The show has already been renewed through season 40, scheduled to air in 2028–2029. Over the years, it has remained a cultural institution, following the lives of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie in the fictional town of Springfield, while satirizing everything from politics to pop culture.

Streaming has also reinvigorated the series, with showrunner Matt Selman noting that its availability on Disney+ has introduced the franchise to a new generation of viewers. “Now instead of the kids watching it on local TV in the afternoon, they can just watch it all, all the time, all day, all forever,” Selman explained. He credited streaming as helping the show stay relevant across decades.

The Long Road to a Sequel

Though discussions of a sequel have surfaced multiple times since the first film’s success, concrete developments were delayed. In 2014, longtime executive producer James L. Brooks admitted that Fox had floated the idea of another movie, but no major progress followed. Then in 2024, writer and producer Al Jean revealed that talks had stalled in part due to the Covid-19 pandemic and concerns over whether theatrical animation could recover at the box office. Disney reportedly wanted to gauge the performance of Inside Out 2 before moving forward—and with the Pixar sequel earning $1.6 billion globally, briefly becoming the highest-grossing animated film of all time before being surpassed by Ne Zha 2, confidence in theatrical animation returned.

A Pop Culture Milestone

The Simpsons’ ability to adapt across generations has kept it firmly woven into pop culture. Even after voice actor Pamela Hayden, known for playing Milhouse, retired in 2024, the show continued its momentum. Playfully acknowledging the series’ endurance, the season 36 premiere jokingly billed itself as “The Simpsons finale” because Bart, eternally 10 years old, finally turned 11.

With its sequel now set to land in summer 2027, fans of Springfield’s most famous family can finally look forward to seeing Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie return to cinemas after a 20-year gap.
