Welcome back to the blog! Today, we’re diving into the neon-drenched, crime-ridden streets of Janix in Star Wars – Shadow of Maul #1 – A Breakdown. This issue serves as a thrilling prelude to the upcoming Disney+ show, and it’s packed with gritty detective work, internal corruption, and a terrifying final appearance by a legendary Sith. Here is a page-by-page breakdown of the story leading up to that chilling “To be continued” cliffhanger.
The Interrogation Begins
The story opens in the Mid Rim metropolis of Janix. We are introduced to Captain Brander Lawson, the weary head of the local Tactical Defense Force. He is currently sitting in an interrogation room at Police HQ, facing off against Clariveen Ruhl from Internal Investigations.

Ruhl is looking for answers regarding a botched operation that left one officer dead and another missing. Lawson, ever the stubborn lawman, refuses to say a word until he gets a cup of caf.
Flashback: The Sting Operation
Lawson recounts the events of a week prior. He had gone undercover into a members-only club to bust an illegal smuggling ring. His droid partner, Two-Boots, waits outside, anxious about the danger Lawson is putting himself in.

Inside the bar, Lawson attempts to buy Corellian whiskey and starts negotiating for “specimens”—vials containing some of the deadliest poisons in the galaxy. The dealer reveals he knows Lawson’s identity and mocks the law on Janix. He then reveals Lawson has already been poisoned with the venom of a Wasber.
Chaos at the Club
As the venom takes hold, Lawson calls for Two-Boots. The droid bursts in, attempting to make arrests, but a firefight erupts. Despite his blurred vision and cramping muscles, Lawson refuses to let Two-Boots call for backup, trusting only his own aim to finish the job.
A Corrupt Department
Back in the present at Police HQ, Ruhl and Chief Klyce are furious. The sting was a mess—the clients escaped, evidence was destroyed, and Lawson nearly died. Lawson argues that there is a mole in the department, as the smugglers were tipped off.

To “keep the chaos to a minimum,” Klyce assigns two new officers, Hendrix and Fraxmoor, to Lawson’s unit. Lawson is immediately suspicious of the newcomers.
The Safe House Betrayal
Lawson reveals they have a witness—a woman whose brother was killed by the syndicates—hidden in a safe house. He puts the new recruits on rotation to guard her.
However, the mole is revealed almost immediately. Officer Hendrix betrays the unit, working for a crime lord named Deemis. A violent confrontation occurs at the safe house. While Lawson and Two-Boots manage to stop Hendrix, the other new recruit, Fraxmoor, goes missing.
The Shadow Arrives
The interrogation ends with Lawson warning Ruhl that Janix is a place where you have to break rules to survive. As Lawson leaves, the perspective shifts away from the city.
In the Cina system, a shady pilot is looking for a passenger who wants to “stick to the shadows.” He brags about his ship’s scanner-proof cargo holds and fake chain codes. He meets his passenger: Darth Maul.

Maul doesn’t care for the pilot’s sales pitch. He ignites his lightsaber, kills the pilot, and steals the ship for himself. As he prepares to leave for Janix, the issue ends with a chilling promise: “Janix awaits.”
To be continued… on April 8, 2026! This issue perfectly sets the stage for a collision course between a gritty police captain and one of the most dangerous figures in the Star Wars galaxy. Stay tuned for our review of issue #2!
