At the Sony Corporate Strategy Meeting 2024, Chairman and CEO Kenichiro Yoshida and President, COO, and CFO Hiroki Totoki outlined a strategic shift for the company, emphasizing creativity across its business units. This approach moves Sony away from its traditional focus on gadgets and towards fostering innovation in games, movies, music, sensors, and intellectual property (IP).
The Creation Shift
Yoshida detailed the “Creation Shift,” which targets three primary business layers: Content, Products & Services, and Semiconductors (CMOS image sensors). This strategy is driven by Sony’s purpose to “fill the world with emotion, through the power of creativity and technology.” The emphasis is on enabling real-time creation through advanced technologies like CMOS image sensors and game engines. For example, Sony’s investments in Epic Games and the utilization of the Unreal Engine are pivotal in transforming ideas into reality in real-time.
Creative Entertainment Vision
Totoki presented Sony’s “Creative Entertainment Vision,” a long-term strategy that looks beyond its 5th Mid-Range Plan (FY2024 – FY2026). This vision focuses on maximizing IP value, establishing a robust technology platform, and enhancing the diversity of Sony’s businesses and people. Sony aims to support creators globally, transcending physical, virtual, and time dimensions, fostering vibrant communities, and delivering experiences rich in narrative.
Strategic Business Units
- Games and Network Services: Sony continues to lead in the gaming industry with its PlayStation brand. The synergy between Sony’s gaming and entertainment divisions, like the adaptation of game IP into live-action content through PlayStation Productions, exemplifies this strategy. Upcoming titles include adaptations of “Horizon” and “God of War”.
- Movies and Music: Sony Pictures and Sony Music Entertainment are at the forefront of content creation. Investments in high-quality production studios and technologies like virtual production and advanced visualization facilities such as Torchlight highlight Sony’s commitment to the film and music industries. The company also focuses on cultivating new IPs and nurturing talent through initiatives like the Crunchyroll Anime Awards and partnerships with animation studios like Aniplex.
- Imaging and Sensing Solutions: Sony’s advancements in CMOS image sensors are critical to its strategy. These sensors are used in a variety of applications, from professional cameras like the Alpha 9 III and the VENICE digital cinema camera to safety systems in the mobility sector. The goal is to capture the real world “as it is” and provide creators with tools for authentic and high-quality content creation.
IP and Technological Platforms
Sony’s approach to IP is multifaceted, involving creation, cultivation, and expansion across various entertainment categories. Initiatives like the “AnimeCanvas” software and the “India Hero Project” aim to support and nurture creators globally. Additionally, Sony is developing an engagement platform leveraging the PlayStation Network infrastructure to enhance fan interaction and streamline service integration across its entertainment ecosystem.
