Fans of the beloved green ogre will have to wait a little longer to return to the magical land of Far, Far Away. Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation have officially postponed Shrek 5 for the second time, moving its release from December 23, 2026, to June 30, 2027.
Originally scheduled for July 1, 2026, the highly anticipated sequel’s date has now been pushed twice, marking a delay of nearly a full year from its initial plan. The studios have not disclosed the reason behind this change, but history suggests they’ve found great success launching animated blockbusters in the summer, with hits like Despicable Me, How to Train Your Dragon, and The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Why the Date Shift Matters
Shrek 5’s new release slot places it less than a week after Sony’s upcoming Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse. This means the ogre will face direct competition at the box office, but it also avoids clashing with Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday and Ice Age 6, both slated for December 2026 — the film’s original holiday season rivals.
As part of the shuffle, Universal has also moved up an Untitled Illumination Event Film from its late June position to April 16, 2027.
Who’s Returning to Far, Far Away
The iconic voice cast is coming back for more fairy-tale fun:
- Mike Myers as Shrek
- Eddie Murphy as Donkey
- Cameron Diaz as Fiona
Joining them is Zendaya, who will voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter — a brand-new character in the franchise. The film will be directed by series veterans Conrad Vernon and Walt Dohrn.

What We Know About Shrek 5
While DreamWorks has kept the plot under wraps, a 30-second teaser released in March 2025 gave fans a first look at the sequel’s updated art style and a sneak peek at Zendaya’s character. The animation appears to be a fresh take while keeping the franchise’s signature humor and charm intact.
This will be the first mainline Shrek movie since 2010’s Shrek Forever After. In the years since, audiences have only seen the characters in Puss in Boots spinoffs. Shrek 5 is set to debut 25 years after the original 2001 classic, which grossed nearly $500 million worldwide and became the first-ever winner of the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature.
A Long-Awaited Return
The gap between Shrek Forever After and Shrek 5 will span 17 years, making the sequel one of the longest-awaited animated follow-ups in recent memory. With the original films redefining fairy tales through their witty, satirical lens, the return of Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona — along with new characters — has stirred major excitement among fans.
Mark your calendars: Shrek 5 stomps into theaters on June 30, 2027.
