Benoit Blanc is set to return in Rian Johnson’s third installment of the “Knives Out” series, now officially titled “Wake Up Dead Man.” Johnson announced the title and the 2025 release date in a teaser video posted on X (formerly Twitter) early Friday morning.
The 45-second teaser features Daniel Craig, who reprises his role as the astute detective Benoit Blanc, narrating the sequence: “In the beginning, the knives came out. Then, behold, the glass was shattered. But my most dangerous case yet is about to be revealed.” This narration cleverly references the previous two films, 2019’s “Knives Out” and 2022’s “Glass Onion.”
Johnson’s announcement on X was preceded by a cryptic post featuring a Pokémon egg, hinting at an imminent revelation. About ten minutes later, he confirmed the title, “Wake Up Dead Man,” and expressed his excitement about the project. “I love everything about whodunnits, but one of the things I love most is how malleable the genre is. There’s a whole tonal spectrum from Carr to Christie, and getting to explore that range is one of the most exciting things about making Benoit Blanc movies. We’re about to go into production on the 3rd one, and I’m very, very excited to share the title, which gives a little hint of where it’s going,” Johnson wrote.
“Wake Up Dead Man” will be distributed by Netflix, continuing Johnson’s lucrative two-sequel deal with the streaming giant, reportedly worth $450 million. While the first film, distributed by Lionsgate, grossed $312 million worldwide, Netflix’s “Glass Onion” saw a limited theatrical release, earning $13 million before becoming available for streaming.
In addition to working on the third “Knives Out” film, Johnson is currently busy with several other projects. He is in the midst of producing the second season of his Peacock mystery series, “Poker Face,” starring Natasha Lyonne. Johnson and his producing partner, Ram Bergman, have also recently inked a two-picture deal with Warner Bros., adding even more to the director’s packed schedule.
“Wake Up Dead Man” promises to bring another thrilling mystery for fans to unravel when it hits screens in 2025. With Johnson at the helm and Craig back as the iconic detective, anticipation is already building for the next chapter in this beloved whodunnit series.
