The legend is back, but he is far from the man he once was. In the Punisher (2026) #1, titled “War Wounds,” we find Frank Castle navigating a fractured New York City while battling a fractured mind.
The Shadow in the Dark
Frank Castle has returned to New York City, finally free from the mind control he suffered as a hitman for the Kingpin. However, his return is a mystery even to himself. He lingers in the dark places of the city, described as a “shadow of himself”.

His physical and mental state is precarious. During a brief encounter with thugs who try to mug him, Frank’s lethal efficiency is still present, but it’s clear something is wrong . We learn that Kingpin had planted a device in Frank’s brain, which Castle “carved out like a bullet”. Without a healing factor or superpowers, he is just a man struggling to recover from a self-inflicted, life-saving lobotomy .
A City in Chaos

The city is already feeling the impact of his return. Madeline Phipps of WNEX News reports on several days of chaos: a burning boat full of fentanyl, a high-speed chase in the Battery Park Tunnel, and a torture scene in Brooklyn . These events led to the capture of crime boss Tombstone (Alonzo Lincoln). Witnesses report seeing a man with a skull emblazoned on his chest, sparking rumors that the Punisher has returned.
The Captive Ally

Frank is not entirely alone. He has sought out his old ally, Microchip, but the reunion is anything but friendly. Frank is holding Microchip responsible for his part in his previous manipulation and is currently keeping him captive in a compound. Frank’s mind is described as a “hot bruise,” as he struggles to piece together who he is and what comes next.
The Return of Jigsaw

While Frank hides in the shadows, a familiar face resurfaces at Ryker’s Island. Tombstone receives a visitor who reveals himself as Jigsaw. Jigsaw, who survived a near-death experience, explains that he saw a “light at the end of a tunnel”—a vision of a different life where he is the “boss of bosses” . He intimidates Tombstone into signing over all his businesses and properties by threatening Tombstone’s family. Jigsaw plans to “carve up New York” and fill the power vacuum left by the Kingpin.
The Compulsory War

Back on the streets, Frank continues his mission, though it feels more like an instinct than a choice. He is compared to a “white blood cell hunting for a contagion”. He intervenes in a robbery at “Chan’s Bodega,” dispatching the criminals with cold brutality . Despite his actions, he is in pain; his body is “punishing him” as he struggles with his brain injury. Meanwhile, at WNEX, Madeline Phipps tries to convince her editor that the Punisher’s return is the story of the century, but she is dismissed and assigned to cover a puppy parade instead.
A Desperate Plea
Frank returns to the compound where he is holding Microchip. Finally admitting the severity of his condition, Frank tells his former ally, “Something’s wrong with my brain. And I need you to fix it”. This highlights Frank’s desperation; he knows he cannot continue his war in his current diminished state.
The Master Plan

The issue concludes with Jigsaw detailing his vision for the future. He sees the chaos of New York’s gangs as a “mess” and believes he is the “big-picture guy” who can stitch it all together . There is only one obstacle in his way: Frank Castle. Jigsaw’s ultimate goal is to flush the Punisher out and finish him off for good, clearing the path for himself to become the new Kingpin.
