Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 is Delayed — and the Finale’s Big Question Stays Unanswered

Fans who stayed up through the Season 1 cliffhanger — a violent shootout that left John and Jane’s fates unclear — will have to wait even longer to learn what happens next. Mr. & Mrs. Smith Season 2 is Delayed, with sources saying cast-related issues are a major factor in the delay. With the creative direction and timetable unsettled, the show’s future remains uncertain for now.

Casting shake-up and the anthology plan

After Season 1’s success, the producers appeared to be moving toward a bold reset: one-year deals and public reporting suggested the series might adopt an anthology approach, swapping lead characters and stories between seasons. To that end, Mark Eydelshteyn (Anora) and Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) were tapped to headline Season 2 — Eydelshteyn announced in December and Thatcher was added in February — effectively stepping into the eponymous Mr. and Mrs. Smith roles for the new chapter.

But other expected pieces of the new-season puzzle never locked in. A number of high-profile names surfaced in casting buzz over the summer — including Lily-Rose Depp, Francesca Scorsese, Levon Hawke, Wagner Moura and Gael García Bernal — yet sources say those deals never closed. With several attachments unfinalized and principal casting still unsettled, the production window has slipped and the new season’s start is now indefinite.

Money, incentives and a changing production plan

Behind-the-scenes logistics added another layer of complexity. On March 31, the California Film Commission granted the series a $22.4 million tax credit tied to a planned relocation of production from New York to Los Angeles for Season 2. That incentive made clear the studio’s intention to shift the show’s base of operations, but financial incentives come with timelines: projects typically must begin principal photography within 18 months of receiving the credit. The delay raises questions about whether the current credit will remain intact, though studios commonly pursue replacement or updated incentives if circumstances force a schedule change.

New Regency — which co-produces the series with Amazon MGM Studios — is reportedly hoping to get pre-production rolling toward the end of the year with an eye toward shooting in 2026, but those plans are tentative and depend heavily on resolving the lingering casting and scheduling issues.

Creative staff moves complicate timing

Compounding the production pause, showrunner Francesca Sloane has taken a multi-year overall deal with HBO and is developing other high-profile work; she’s slated to write the opening episode for Big Little Lies Season 3. Sloane remains attached to Mr. & Mrs. Smith as a creator and executive producer, and Donald Glover is still listed as an executive producer and co-creator, but these new commitments may further affect the series’ timing and development priorities.

When studios and showrunners take on parallel projects, calendar conflicts and shifting creative energy can force producers to re-evaluate launch windows — a familiar problem for prestige television in a crowded content marketplace.

What this means for the cliffhanger — and for returning cast members

The Season 1 finale’s unresolved gunfight left the audience with a central narrative question: did John and Jane survive? With Season 2 production delayed and reports indicating neither Donald Glover nor Maya Erskine were expected to return as leads, answers to that cliffhanger may arrive in an unfamiliar form — if they arrive at all. Glover has stayed involved on the production side, but his absence (along with Erskine’s potential non-return) strengthens the idea that the show is leaning into season-by-season reinvention rather than direct continuation.

Amazon and the creative team have remained tight-lipped about the long-term story plan, and a studio representative declined to comment on the current reporting.

Season 1’s reception and the stakes for a return

Season 1 arrived to strong attention when it premiered in February 2024: it ranked among Prime Video’s top new series debut in the U.S. and earned significant awards recognition, collecting 16 Emmy nominations. The series won two Emmys, including one for stunt coordination and a Guest Actress win for Michaela Coel. That success raises the stakes for any follow-up: with critical praise and awards under its belt, a delayed Season 2 will carry pressure to meet or exceed audience and industry expectations — even if the show reframes itself around new leads.

Bottom line

At present, Mr. & Mrs. Smith’s second season is paused by unresolved casting matters and shifting creative commitments. The $22.4 million California incentive signaled a planned move to Los Angeles, but timing constraints tied to that credit add urgency to a situation that remains unsettled. For viewers, the most immediate consequence is that the Season 1 cliffhanger — the gunfight that left John and Jane’s fates hazy — will remain unresolved for the foreseeable future, and when the series returns it may do so in a very different form.
