The fan-favorite Max Original adult animated series, Creature Commandos, has officially been renewed for a season 2. The announcement comes as the series, created by acclaimed filmmaker and DC Studios Co-Chair James Gunn, approaches the finale of its first season, set to air on January 9.

With its unique blend of dark humor, emotional depth, and action-packed storytelling, Creature Commandos has quickly become a cornerstone in the new DC Universe.

A Groundbreaking Addition to the DC Universe

Creature Commandos is the first series to debut under the new DC Universe continuity, which will expand further with the highly anticipated release of Superman in theaters next summer. The show’s plot centers on a secret team of incarcerated monsters recruited for missions too dangerous for humans—a last-resort group of unlikely heroes who take on the impossible.

The season one cast boasts an impressive lineup, including:

  • Steve Agee as Economos
  • Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana
  • Anya Chalotra as Circe
  • Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky
  • marvel-knights-punisher-2025-1-frank-castles-nightmare/”>frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr.
  • Sean Gunn as GI Robot & Weasel
  • David Harbour as Frankenstein
  • Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus
  • Indira Varma as The Bride
  • Viola Davis reprising her role as Amanda Waller from The Suicide Squad and Peacemaker

Critical Acclaim and Fan Praise

Since its debut on December 5, Creature Commandos has been lauded by both critics and fans. TheWrap described the series as “a fun, endearing start to a new cinematic universe that offers gore, thrills, laughs, and emotions galore.” IGN praised it as “a really rad show” with standout performances, while Collider highlighted its humor, emotional depth, and memorable characters, crediting Gunn’s creative vision as a defining factor.

Behind the Scenes: The Visionaries and Producers

James Gunn, who wrote all seven episodes of season one, continues to be deeply involved in the project even while balancing his role as co-chair of DC Studios and directing the upcoming Superman film. Gunn expressed his enthusiasm for the series, saying, “Every time I dealt with Creature Commandos, it was like Christmas for me.”

The show is executive produced by Gunn alongside Peter Safran, Dean Lorey, and Sam Register. Rick Morales serves as the supervising producer, with Warner Bros. Animation handling production.

What’s Next for Creature Commandos?

Amy Gravitt, Executive Vice President of Comedy Programming at HBO and Max, shared her excitement for the renewal: “Only James Gunn could have conjured this wild band of misfit monsters who tug at your heart and force you to root passionately for them. We couldn’t be more delighted to continue their Stories.”

Peter Girardi, Executive Vice President of Alternative Programming at Warner Bros. Animation, echoed similar sentiments: “Thanks to the brilliant imagination of James and the talent of our amazing artists, DC fans fell in love with this new family of heroes. We are excited to continue this wild ride with our partners at Max.”

A Promising Future for DC Fans

Creature Commandos is part of a growing list of successful DC content on Max, following hits like Peacemaker and the Elseworlds series The Penguin. Gunn and Safran praised Max for consistently exceeding expectations, stating, “Max has delivered above industry expectations and beyond our wildest imaginings. We are proud to call Max home.”

With its innovative storytelling and memorable characters, Creature Commandos has firmly established itself as a pivotal piece in the DC Universe puzzle. As fans eagerly await the season one finale and the arrival of season two, it’s clear this series has only just begun its monster-filled journey.
