Limp Bizkit bassist and founding member Sam Rivers has passed away at the age of 48, the band confirmed through a heartfelt post on social media. The announcement, shared on October 18, expressed the band’s deep grief, referring to Rivers as “our brother, our bandmate, our heartbeat.” The cause of his death has not been made public.
In their tribute, the band members described Rivers as more than just a bassist—he was “pure magic, the pulse beneath every song, the calm in the chaos, the soul in the sound.” They recalled how his effortless talent and immense heart defined their music and spirit, noting that his light and rhythm could never be replaced. The message concluded with a touching farewell: “We love you, Sam. We’ll carry you with us, always. Rest easy, brother. Your music never ends.”
DJ Lethal, who performs alongside Rivers’ longtime bandmates Fred Durst, John Otto, and Wes Borland, added an emotional message in the comments, asking fans to respect the privacy of Rivers’ family. He encouraged supporters to honor the late musician by “playing Sam Rivers basslines all day,” and reflected on how Rivers would continue to live on through the music, charity work, and friendships he cultivated. “We are heartbroken,” Lethal wrote. “Enjoy every millisecond of life—it’s not guaranteed.”

Rivers co-founded Limp Bizkit after befriending Durst while the two were working retail jobs, eventually forming the nu-metal powerhouse in 1994. The band’s fusion of rock and rap helped shape late 1990s and early 2000s mainstream music, producing landmark albums like Significant Other and Chocolate Starfish and the Hot Dog Flavored Water. Their chart-topping singles, including “Rollin’ (Air Raid Vehicle),” “Take a Look Around,” and their rendition of “Behind Blue Eyes,” cemented Limp Bizkit as one of the defining acts of their era.
Through his basslines and stage presence, Sam Rivers became the steady foundation of Limp Bizkit’s explosive sound—a calm force behind the chaos of their high-energy performances. His influence stretched beyond music, touching fans and peers alike through his generosity and unwavering spirit. While the world has lost an irreplaceable talent, his rhythm and legacy continue to echo in every note he left behind.
