Knull, often referred to as the “God of the Symbiotes,” is a relatively new yet pivotal figure in Marvel Comics lore, first fully introduced in Venom Vol. 4 #3 in 2018. His character will soon make a live-action debut in Venom: The Last Dance, the third installment in the Venom franchise, set to be one of Venom’s most formidable adversaries yet. But who exactly is Knull, and why does his arrival in the movies matter so much?

The Origins of Knull

Knull’s story begins long before the universe we know, in the abyss of darkness that existed before the creation of light. He was born from this primordial void and has since become a symbol of pure destruction and darkness. When the Celestials began creating light in the universe, Knull saw this as a threat to his domain and sought to return the cosmos to its original darkness. His first significant act of defiance was forging the All-Black Necrosword, a weapon made from the Living Abyss, which he used to kill one of the Celestials.

Knull is also responsible for creating the symbiotes, including Venom. He crafted them as extensions of himself to spread darkness across the universe. These symbiotes initially obeyed his will, forming a hive mind under his control. However, over time, they rebelled and imprisoned him on the planet Klyntar, which in their language translates to “cage”—a world they created using their own bodies.

Powers and Abilities

As the creator of the symbiotes, Knull wields god-like powers. His abilities include superhuman strength, immortality, and the capacity to manipulate darkness and create symbiotic creatures at will. His iconic weapon, the Necrosword, allows him to destroy gods and tear apart planets. Knull can also control an army of symbiote dragons, adding to his terror-inducing presence in the Marvel universe.

One of his most powerful abilities is his connection to the symbiote hive mind. This psychic link allows him to dominate any symbiote in the universe, making him a virtually unstoppable force. His battle with Thor and the Avengers during the King in Black storyline is one of the most epic confrontations in Marvel history, and Venom was instrumental in defeating him.

Knull in Venom: The Last Dance

In Venom: The Last Dance, Knull is expected to pose the biggest threat Eddie Brock and Venom have ever faced. The trailers have teased Knull’s arrival as a climactic challenge for Venom, likely involving an invasion of Earth led by Knull’s symbiotic army. This confrontation will not only be a personal battle for Venom but could also serve as a larger crossover event that ties into the wider Marvel Universe.

There are hints that Knull’s introduction might lead to an eventual showdown with other iconic Marvel characters, such as Spider-Man, especially since Sony and Marvel have left the door open for crossovers between their universes. Whether Venom: The Last Dance marks Knull’s ultimate defeat or sets him up for future appearances in the MCU remains to be seen, but his presence guarantees a cosmic-level threat that could redefine the Venom series.

With the combination of Knull’s terrifying powers and the emotional weight of Eddie Brock’s journey, Venom: The Last Dance promises to be an epic conclusion to Tom Hardy’s run as Venom. Fans can expect a dark and intense battle that could lead to new narrative possibilities in both Sony’s Spider-Man Universe and the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe.
