James Gunn Shares Update on Superman Sequel and Peacemaker Season 2’s Role in the DCU

James Gunn is keeping busy as co-head of DC Studios. Not only has he completed the treatment for the next Superman film, but he also confirmed that Peacemaker Season 2 will play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the DC Universe.

Gunn Finishes Superman Sequel Treatment

In a recent interview, Gunn revealed that he has finished the treatment for his Superman follow-up, which stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel. Unlike standard Hollywood treatments, Gunn’s approach is far more detailed.

“My treatments are incredibly intense,” he said. “They’re 60-page treatments with dialogue and everything. I’m totally done with it and now I’m turning that into a script. We’re planning out when we’re going to shoot that. It’s going to be much sooner rather than later.”

Although Gunn has not clarified whether the new project is a direct sequel or a different installment in what he now calls the “Superman Saga,” it’s clear that the story will continue to expand the DCU narrative.

Superman Leads Into Peacemaker

At the New York premiere of Peacemaker Season 2, Gunn emphasized the importance of Superman’s story leading directly into the series. With the show returning more than three years after its first season, Gunn made it clear that this isn’t just another superhero spinoff—it’s a key chapter in DC’s interconnected universe.

“It’s a big part,” Gunn said. “Superman leads directly into Peacemaker. It should be noted that this is for adults, not for children, but Superman sets the stage for the show. This season also sets up the rest of the DCU. It’s incredibly important.”

The season promises plenty of surprises, with guest stars and characters from Superman expected to make appearances.

John Cena on Peacemaker’s Next Chapter

John Cena, who returns as Christopher Smith aka Peacemaker, echoed Gunn’s comments about the show’s role in the larger DC narrative.

“This season is about furthering the narrative,” Cena explained. “Instead of stand-alone properties, all of the DCU is now connected. As you saw, Peacemaker showed up in Superman. Season two takes the 11th Street Kids on their next adventure, but it also ties heavily into the DCU’s future.”

Cena highlighted that the new episodes are not just about continuing Peacemaker’s story, but also about carrying forward the overall vision of Gunn and Peter Safran for the universe.

A Diverse Slate of Upcoming DC Projects

Gunn also pointed to the creative variety within the DC slate, ensuring that audiences won’t get a uniform “company style.”

“There’s not a company style. It’s not like every movie is gonna be like Superman,” Gunn explained. “The artists, directors, and writers will bring their own voice. Clayface, for instance, is a complete horror film even though it’s set in the same universe. We don’t want people being bored.”

Alongside Superman and Peacemaker, the upcoming DC projects include Supergirl, Wonder Woman, the Lanterns TV series, and the horror-driven Clayface film.

A Clear Roadmap for the DCU

Between his Superman sequel and Peacemaker’s return, Gunn has laid out a clear vision for how DC Studios will connect its stories going forward. Superman will serve as the foundation, directly leading into Peacemaker Season 2, which will then expand the groundwork for other DC projects.

“I don’t think there’s anything that I’ve ever done that I love more than this season of Peacemaker,” Gunn said. “So I’m so excited for people to see it.”

Peacemaker Season 2, starring John Cena, Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Holland, Freddie Stroma, Steve Agee, and Frank Grillo, begins streaming August 21 on HBO Max.
