Milly Alcock’s highly anticipated debut as Supergirl is drawing closer to reality, with the first official teaser footage now available and a full teaser trailer arriving this week. The brief glimpse into James Gunn’s revamped DC Universe showcases a markedly different tone from the bright earnestness of Gunn’s Superman film. The teaser introduces Kara in sunglasses, calmly awaiting a rocket’s arrival — an image that immediately signals audiences should expect a grittier, more punk-rock aesthetic rather than the traditionally sunny Supergirl story they might anticipate.
Directed by Craig Gillespie (known for Cruella and I, Tonya) and written by Ana Nogueira, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow draws inspiration from Tom King’s acclaimed comic arc, deliberately crafted to push Kara into darker and more complex emotional territory. Nogueira explained the appeal of King’s interpretation, noting that witnessing Krypton’s complete destruction fundamentally changes how one should perceive the character. The writer struggled with versions of Supergirl that were excessively cheerful, but King’s approach finally revealed the character’s true depth to her.
Alcock first introduced herself to DCU audiences in 2025’s Superman film, where she made a memorable appearance at the Fortress of Solitude to retrieve her dog, Krypto. James Gunn has expressed tremendous confidence in Alcock’s casting, calling her “the best bit of casting I’ve ever done in my entire life” and praising her as “absolutely stunning in the movie.” Krypto will remain a significant presence in Supergirl’s solo adventure.
The supporting cast brings considerable star power to the production. Jason Momoa, previously known for his role as Aquaman in the DCEU, makes his debut in the revamped DC Universe by taking on his lifelong dream role of Lobo. Momoa has described the character as one he’s always wanted to portray, noting that the physical appearance closely matches the comic book source material. He confirmed that while Lobo will have a presence in the film, it remains Kara’s story, with his character appearing for a significant but not primary portion of the narrative. Matthias Schoenaerts (The Old Guard) assumes the villain role of Krem of the Yellow Hills, while Eve Ridley portrays Ruthye Marye Knoll. Additional cast members include David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Alice Hewkin.
The film represents Supergirl’s first solo theatrical release since 1984, positioning her as a major character in DCU Chapter 1: “Gods and Monsters.” The screenplay is being penned by Ana Nogueira, who is simultaneously working on scripts for DC Studios’ Wonder Woman and Teen Titans projects. Principal photography wrapped in May 2025, keeping the production on track for its theatrical debut.
Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will arrive in theaters on June 26, 2026, with the teaser trailer becoming available during the week of December 8, 2025. The film promises to deliver a fresh perspective on Kara Zor-El, embracing the complex emotional landscape that Tom King established in the source material rather than relying on the traditionally optimistic characterizations audiences have seen before.
