The much-anticipated “IT” prequel series “Welcome to Derry” has finally given fans their first glimpse into the horror that awaits, with the release of a spine-chilling teaser trailer. The teaser, which dropped the same night as the Season 2 finale of House of the Dragon, offers just six seconds of footage, but that’s all it takes to set the stage for a series that promises to be a terrifying addition to the IT universe.

A Glimpse of Derry’s Dark Secrets

Although the infamous pennywise the Clown, portrayed by Bill Skarsgård, doesn’t make an appearance in this brief teaser, the ominous tone is unmistakable. The trailer opens with a view of the “Welcome to Derry, Maine: Birthplace of Paul Bunyan” sign, immediately signaling that viewers are about to re-enter the unsettling world of Derry, a town steeped in horror and malevolence. The next few seconds reveal a haunting image of a group of terrified people—some covered in blood and a mysterious goo—alongside an older child sporting a creepy smile that will undoubtedly leave viewers uneasy. This teaser hints at the dark and disturbing events that will unfold in the series, leaving fans eager for more.

Return of Pennywise and the Expansion of the IT Universe

Welcome to Derry serves as a prequel to the recent IT films directed by Andy Muschietti. Initially, it was reported that Bill Skarsgård would not be returning as Pennywise; however, it has since been confirmed that he will reprise his role as the iconic, terrifying clown. This decision has only heightened the excitement surrounding the series, as Skarsgård’s portrayal of Pennywise has become a defining aspect of the IT franchise.

The series is slated to have nine episodes, with Muschietti set to direct four of them. The anticipation for Welcome to Derry is palpable, as fans are eager to see how this prequel will expand on the lore of Derry and explore the origins of the town’s sinister history.

A Town Steeped in Horror

The fictional town of Derry, Maine, is a central location in many of Stephen King’s works. While its most notable appearance is in IT, the town first appeared in King’s 1981 short story “The Bird and the Album.” Over the years, Derry has been featured in or referenced in numerous other novels and short stories, including Secret Window, Secret Garden (1990), Insomnia (1994), Bag of Bones (1998), and 11/22/63 (2011). The town’s dark and eerie atmosphere has made it an iconic setting in King’s literary universe, and Welcome to Derry is set to delve even deeper into its terrifying past.

HBO Original Branding and the Promise of More Horror

Welcome to Derry is now officially an HBO Original, a shift from its initial branding as a Max exclusive. This rebranding aligns with HBO’s strategy to differentiate its shows, as noted by HBO and Max content CEO Casey Bloys. According to Bloys, the rebranding was necessary to clearly delineate between HBO shows and Max shows, with Welcome to Derry being produced with the same level of care and talent associated with HBO’s acclaimed series.

Director Emmanuel Osei-Kuffour, who is among the team bringing this prequel to life, has assured audiences that Welcome to Derry will be just as terrifying as the recent IT films. Osei-Kuffour emphasized that the series is “very character driven” and promises to deliver the same emotional depth and horror that fans expect from the IT franchise.

What to Expect

While details about Welcome to Derry remain sparse, the teaser trailer has undoubtedly whetted the appetite of horror fans. With its brief yet effective glimpse into the world of Derry, the teaser sets the tone for a series that will explore the dark, twisted history of this infamous town. As fans eagerly await more information and a full trailer, the excitement for Welcome to Derry continues to build. The series is expected to debut in 2025, promising nine episodes of spine-chilling horror that will expand the IT universe in new and terrifying ways.
