Renowned director Dean DeBlois, celebrated for his work on the original “How to Train Your Dragon” animated trilogy, has announced the start of filming for the live-action remake of this beloved DreamWorks franchise. Sharing a behind-the-scenes glimpse on Instagram, DeBlois showcased a clapperboard adorned with the film’s logo, set against the backdrop of a physical set replicating the village of Berk, familiar to fans from the animated movies.

Directorial Vision and Cast Details

DeBlois reprises his role as the director, bringing a promise of authenticity and continuity to the remake. Gerard Butler returns to his role as Stoick, joined by an exciting new cast including Mas Thames of “The Black Phone” fame as Hiccup, and Nico Parker, known for “The Last of Us,” playing Astrid. Adding a comedic touch, Nick Frost from “Hot Fuzz” will portray Gobber the Belch in this live-action rendition.

Storyline Expectations

While details of the live-action adaptation’s storyline remain under wraps, it is anticipated to be a fresh remix of the 2010 original. The challenge lies in striking a balance between offering a unique interpretation and staying true to the themes of the original trilogy, which concluded in 2019. Fans are eagerly awaiting to see how the remake will differentiate itself while maintaining the essence of the original.

This project marks DreamWorks’ first foray into live-action remakes, potentially setting a precedent for future adaptations of its animated classics. The anticipation around how the live-action “How to Train Your Dragon” will compare to its animated predecessor is high, with the release scheduled for next year. Under DeBlois’s guidance, there is a strong expectation that the film will embody the heart and spirit of the original series, while exploring new creative dimensions.
